Default M&K - Miller & Kreisel MX-125 II Subwoofer

I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with this subwoofer. I've been kicking around the idea of upgrading my sub, but I'm also in the process of getting a projector and screen for what I hope to be my new dedicated home theater room (basement).

Well, I ran into a deal on this subwoofer locally for $400...while it is more than I want to spend, it seems like it might be a pretty good deal for a higher end sub. From what I can gather, it has dual 12" subs and the amp is rated at 150 watts (which I'm guessing is incredibly under-rated).

Anyway, when in doubt, I figure it is a good idea to check with the Blu-Ray forum guys!

Lots of M&K gear floating around out there...

Take a look here:

Not sure what's going on with it, but M&K stuff is still being auctioned off.

I found this review of that particular Sub along with a few others on S&V magazine...you have to go to the third page i believe for the M&K. Sounds like it would be a pretty good deal at $400...It once retailed at $1100.

I'm going for it...picking the sub up tomorrow along with 2 M&K fronts (S-100B's) and a center (S-125B). I'll be sure to write up my impressions! I'm excited to say the least!

O.K., so we're waiting.

My wife did some advertising work for M&K back in the late 70's when they where hot on their direct to disc recording technologies. M&K I believe actually invented the subwoofer, building custom subs for Walter Becker of Steely Dan and later several other famous musicians. The M&K brand is now dead, but Kreisel has introduced a new line under the MK Sound brand. Nonetheless, you got some sweet speakers. What are your impressions?

Yep you are correct but the speaker is a rather important part of the quality M&K sound , for the price 2 would be nice , but when I read no M&K driver that turned me off

Congrats jdlivestrong. M&K has some of the best subs around, IMO. I've used an MX-350MkII for years and love it!

The MX-125 Mk II is an awesome sub, and if it's in good shape that's a great price. I have two M & K subs, a V-125 in my home theater room, and an MX-70b, and they're fantastic. The MX-125 may not sound like much by today's standards (125 watts RMS / 250 watts peak), but it has very musical, accurate output down to 20 hz.

Let us know what you think of it. It's a keeper.

Default Thoughts

Sorry for the long delay, I didn't realize anyone was still following the thread. Well, I'm almost finished with my dedicated home theater room so I've had a little bit of time to test thing out. My first impressions of the sub was that it was kind of boomy...the reference level on the back was set at -6 dB (range is from -6 dB to +9 dB) and I didn't know how I could possibly turn it up! I think the issue was that I had the crossover set too high. After adjusting the crossover to around 70 Hz, I noticed a huge improvement in a crisper, cleaner bass.

What I really need to do is get all of my crossovers figured out so that I can properly set up my receiver to get the most from my speakers. I will say that I am very happy with the sub so far...and I'm excited to get it fine tuned to enjoy it even more. The power rating of 150 watts doesn't mean a thing to me...I have the reference level set below the -6 dB (lowest hash mark) and that is more than enough...I can't imagine turning this up past 0 to +9!

Lightbulb M&K subs

EDIT:

IF YOU WANT TO SELL SUBWOOFERS (or anything else for that matter) Post it in the "Trading Forum" here......

BUT.... YOU MUST INCLUDE PRICE. No "Best offer" etc.... include a price and make shipping extra etc.... but DO NOT leave an email address here, and say "contact me with offers"

Default Hi...

Hi, this is dave from Deep Surplus, I thought I would chime in on this thread. There's still a lot of M&K stuff floating around out there. The original woofers p/n 17035 for the push-pull subs are still available on Ebay (I talked to Mavin, the seller and he still has hundreds), they didn't have any 4 ohm drivers for the single driver boxes.

So... I built the VX-1250's and V-860 with our own replacement 4 ohm woofer (one I had spec'd to match closely), however, since the 8 ohm 17035 for the push-pulls is available I used that in our M&K push-pull subs I made (MPS-5160, and a Frankenstein MX-2500/MX-250)

To recap... the small single driver subs are all original except the driver, and the push pulls are all original including the driver. Except the MX-2500/MX-250 is housed in a MPS-5310/MPS-5320 backfire box instead of a MX-350 cabinet the way M&K offered it. The MPS-5160 is all original except for the amplifier mounting plate I made.

If you really want to save money on a M&K Sub-woofer... build you're own

We have all the cabinets available as do it yourself kits, including bolts, screws, gaskets, and everything you need except the amplifier (we sell the VX-1250 and MPS-5160 amplifiers separately), the 8 ohm drivers are still available as I mentioned at the top and can be used singly, but you'll lose output compared to a 4 ohm, and we have our own replacement 4 ohm and 8 ohm drivers if you want to go an even cheaper route.

Hope this helps,

Dave
