Dialing down your contrast will reduce the intensity and duration of IR.

I turned it down to 75 to try it out. Anything below 50 just starts to look ridiculously grey.

Brightness : 68
Color : +50

Sharpness : +35
Color Temperature : Warm 2
Color Mgmt : Off
C.A.T.S. : Off
Video NR : Off
Block NR : Off

Yeah THX mode IIRC starts at 100 contrast. I'm trying it at 50 now to get used to it. I intend to upgrade when Z1 comes out anyways so it may not be a problem for long.

90+ for the CR is odd... & +35 Sharpness! Damn...

We should see if we can't work up some new settimgs.

Either the contrast has to be up past 70 or brightness has to go up.

I've dropped Brightness to 40 and contrast to 50. It looks much darker now and the colors seem dull. I really hope it's not supposed to be like this. I like black levels but this is ridiculous.

I hope the AVS guys get some detailed stuff out soon.

Hate to say it, but if I'm supposed to "get used to" not seeing anything, my next tv will be LCD. And that make's me a sad ruskie.

image retention to Plasma is like motion blur to LCD. each tech has their strengths and weaknesses. IR is a plasma weakness. It is not permanent, will not harm the tv and goes away when you switch to another source. It is just the way these tv's work.

I have the Panasonic 5080u and was dead scared of IR when i first got mine but, i now know it is no big deal. I get IR after paying games, after watching blus etc, but it always goes away within seconds of switching to another source

contrast between 50 and 60 on plasmas is about right
brightness between 40 and 60 is a good range

if you have just switched from a lcd to plasma it will take a while to get used to because plasmas are not as bright as LCD due to them not being driven by a back light, but you will get a better overall, more true to life picture with plasma over LCD. Don't stress about it, just enjoy it

Came to plasma from DLP. Never owned a LCD before.

The problem is I have my room completely dark, no sun or light whatsoever, even monitor turned off, and the picture is still darkish.

If you are considered about the settings on your tv buy a calibration disc like the Spears and Munsil disc and set them yourself. I found this disc to be very good and the manual makes it very easy to use.

Not worried so much about hardcore calibration. I just want to see the picture and not retain the images.

It could help in terms of getting the appropriate contrast/brightness settings for your display which might reduce the appearance of IR. Also, a lot of people suggest using the custom picture mode instead of THX, because they felt it wasn't as good in this model as the previous.

I think thats the problem, you think that IR is the devil and are going to great lengths to prevent it (dimming everything to a unwatchable point). Like what Brettday said its not a big deal goes away in seconds. I would rather have stunning picture and a few seconds of IR than fake looking motion blur compensation ALL the time.

I am not a professional calibrator but until D-Nice on avs forums (or some other reputable calibrators) come out with their settings I am sticking with these and am IMPRESSED with the results.

Switch to the default THX mode and increase brightness by two and adjust hue to +5 (to the right)

I will also try out tweak my tvs new settings to see if I like it any better

I tried the same settings in the custom mode instead of THX and it looks immensely better.
