Default Contrast Ratio

I'm looking at two different 52" Sony LCD TVs to replace my Sony RP as soon as it sells. The two TVs I'm looking at are the KDL-52V5100 and the Sony KDL-52VL150. The Sony KDL-52VL150 is about $400 more and I'm wondering if it's just because the contrast ratio is better than the KDL-52V5100 (70,000:1 vs. 50,000:1). Will I really notice the difference?

Dynamic contrast ratios mean nothing. Read the following:

Plus, contrast ratios and response times in tvs are almost always either exaggerated, misinformed, or just invented.

Only when you are talking about ANSI contrast, which is rarely (if ever) reported for LCDs. Dynamic contrast ratio, which is a ratio of the brightest all-white screen versus an all-black (no signal) screen, is really meaningless as no one views a set in this manner. When you put black and white on the screen at the same time and then measure the ratio, it provides a much more accurate representation of your set's ability. Good sets will be able to display a deep black at the same time as a bright white. Sets that handle this poorly will display a grey-black due to the white light bleeding into the dark areas.
