Default Need Help With Sony Vaio Desktop Playing Blu Ray

Hi folks, I just bought a Sony Vaio Desktop and to my dismay it does not play Blue-Ray Movies. I have read some on maybe the bideo card being an issue... But I have not been able to make a conclusion, so I need some help:

1) has anyone figured out how to overcome the limitation of the Vaio RC310 desktop playing Blu-Ray Movies?

2) It seems the Laptop with BluRay plays movies, then why does the dektop not

First Blu-ray disc drive won’t play Blu-ray movies

Sony BWU-100A
The first Blu-ray (BD) disc drive for desktop PCs is here, but be warned -- it won't play commercial BD movies.

Sony officially announced its BWU-100A product at its "Experience More 2006" event in Sydney yesterday, all the while acknowledging that there's significant room for improvement before the product is viable for integration into media centre PCs.

Vincent Bautista, Sony's product manager for data storage, told CNET.com.au that due to copy protection issues and lagging software development, the drive will only play user-recorded high-definition content from a digital camcorder, and not commercial movies released under the BD format.

Bautista says that one of two reasons for this is the fact that commercial content is encrypted with High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP), which can only be decrypted using a HDCP-compliant graphics card that offers DVI or HDMI connections. Since there are currently no PCs for sale offering graphics chips that support HDCP, this isn't yet possible.

The second reason, according to Bautista, is that BD playback software that can decrypt HDCP isn't "released as a saleable item yet". Today, the only HDCP-supporting BD playback application is the OEM version of Intervideo WinDVD BD that's bundled with Sony's VAIO VGN-AR18GP notebook. The AR18GP also offers an HDCP-compliant HDMI connector, which makes it capable of playing commercial movies without issue.

Bautista is optimistic that both issues will be resolved "soon", and says that despite not being able to play commercial content, the drive is still useful as a "storage device", particularly for those looking to create and distribute their own high-definition home movies on BD-R and BD-RE discs.

The Sony BWU100A has a write speed of 2x and will be available this month for AU$1399

Unhappy Matsushita BD-MLT SW-5582 is the drive in the Vaio

Well, the Blu-Ray Drive in the Sony Vaio is not the Sony BWU-100A
and its the Matsushita BD-MLT SW-5582 as it turns out. So I am at a loss... So now I am taking the PC back to Sony Style store to return it.

Thanks to all who helped.

Question same problem: Sony RC310G & Matsushita SW5582 WinDVD BD

The original poster of this topic apparently returned his/her VAIO without resolving the issues.

I have the same PC and same problem:

RC310G Sony VAIO desktop with Matsushita SW5582 BD drive--OEM on the RC310G (not the Sony BD drive refered to in a response / post link above).

I've installed the upgraded firmware (VB1D1) for the 5582, and upgraded the WinDVD BD software for the AACS issue, but am still having problems playing any BR movies. I've got an LG 22" HDCP monitor connected via DVI, and the OEM nVIDIA GeForce 7600GT.

Has anyone had this same issue? Any suggestions to resolve?

Thanks.

Talking Yes same problem with a Vaio RC204..same BD drive

Hello there.. I know its a long time since you posted this, but I have only recently encountered the problem you had with playing Blu ray discs on the Matshite BD-MLt-SW-5582 drive.(I have a Vaio VGC RC204 D/T)

I also went through the process of updating the AACS nonsense which did actually allow the first stage of a disc to play.. then it said "Stop.. Your display environment does not support protected content". Apparently it somehow thinks that I am trying to play a disc to 2 different outlets.. a TV as well as screen. But I am not and the Graphics card setting (nVidiaGeForce 7600GT) is set to output only a single display via DVI.. so like you I find having jumped through hoops and disappeared up own backside, I am still none the wiser!

I did wonder if there might be a "hack" for this player to disengage HDCP. Its a conundrum and should not have arisen in the first place.

Anyone have any ideas about how to make commercial Blu rays play on this damned thing??

Thanks in advance for any help!!

Boeingman
