Default Cash for Clunkers

Is anyone looking into this? It's the biggest scam I've ever seen lol. I'm not really looking for a new car let alone an American-made one. But I wouldn't mind helping the economy by buying a new car. I've got an '01 Dodge Neon that is basically a beater. I drive my dog around in it and it runs well(surprisingly). However, I'm not sure how much longer it has...

I entered it into the govt. database and it's ineligible. I thought ok...It's a "clunker" which is what they're advertising. I guess it's not worth it now. So I thought all right...I'll throw in my Honda Accord which is loaded but it's 10 years old. I wouldn't call it a clunker. Honda's never die...It rejected that as well. So I really went all out and entered in my S2000 which is worth at least 20k. It rejected that too.

Unfortunately, your 2003 Honda S2000 Base is not eligible for C.A.R.S. incentive credits. The vehicle's combined fuel economy exceeds 18 MPG.

If anyone has a Ferrari sitting in their garage, it may be eligible. I had a little fun with it.

Congratulations! Your 2005 Ferrari F430 Spider F1 Convertible may be eligible for C.A.R.S. incentive credits.

The incentive has two purposes:

1) To spur the hurting automobile industry.

2) Put more efficient vehicles on the road.

The cars you entered won't satisfy the second criteria, thus, they were rejected. If you have a car with a huge V8 or a truck, and downgrade to a car with good gas mileage, its a good deal.

My 4WD 92 Yukon qualifies...just a little bit of rust. Still runs good with 182k on it She rules in the winter.

I'd like to get something new but I don't really trust this program. I have to look into it more.

Plus I really don't want a car payment and higher insurance right now. Business needs to get back to normal..which right now it is not.

I'm not sure if this would be allowed, but I would like to buy a 1994 minivan from my company for like $1,000 and trade that in as well as my 2004 4-Runner and get a new Camry or Altima. I wouldn't be using the cash for clunkers with my 4-Runner, that would be a normal trade-in, but I don't know if you can have a trade-in in addition to the cash for clunkers.

you said it, why go into debt when our cars work just fine? the cost of getting 5-10 more mpg isn't worth it

anyone looking to buy a junker and then taking it to trade in, you have to show that you owned the car for the last year and had it insured (and theoretically, operational).

The car must get less than 18 MPG and be no older than 25 years old. The car you are looking at for full $4500 credit must get at least 10 MPG better than the vehicle you are turning in and base less than $45k for the bottom of the line model. A BMW 335d qualifies because the base is $43,900 and it gets 27MPG.

You don't want to know what they do with your "clunker"...
(my 2005 Nissan Titan is considered a "clunker" - nice to know the government dropped the value down on a vehicle I am still paying a loan on!)

There's nothing wrong with the quality of American-made vehicles. The quality of vehicles has risen across the board in the past few years. Quality is more or less equal no matter which make you choose. I'm sorry if you've had a bad experience with an American-made vehicle, but to categorize the entire American auto industry is junk is both unfair and uninformed.

As I stated..."I wouldn't mind helping the economy by buying a new car.." I've driven several newer cars. They don't look too bad. I'm just worried about what happens down the road. My Neon is pushing 10 years old and it barely has 100k on it(It also gets terrible gas mileage). It's also only worth a few thousand dollars. I paid 12k for it back in 2001. As far as trade-in value a few years down the road...Toyota, Honda/Acura, Nissan just hold their value a heck of a lot better than an American made car.

while the parent company might not be HQ'd in the US, most Toyotas, Hondas and Nissans you buy in the US are built in the US. Can't say the same for Ford and Dodge (Mexico) and GM (Canada) on getting a mainstream vehicle made in the US.

My Nissan Titan was made in Mississippi with an engine made in Tennessee - the only major part I can see made off-shore is the transmission made in Japan.

If you are worried about keeping Americans at work, find out where your car was built first.

That Ford Fusion Hybrid you are looking at wasn't made in the USA...it was made in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. That Honda Accord was made in Marysville, OH and the Toyota Camry made in Georgetown, KY.

To me, the people hard working in the US seem to matter more than the parent company and their mis-managing suits...

it will only be a matter of time before those companys cant afford to operate in the US anymore either. why pay someone $17-20an hour when you can pay them $5-6 in mexico? thats how they think.

Yeah, I looked into it a little and it does seem that way. I'm going to talk to the owner and see if this would persuade him to buy me a company car.

Not necessarily, since they don't use UAW workers and therefore they have much cheaper labor.
