Default open box 5020 or new 111fd

Since i'm taking back my p50x902 i can either get an open box 5020 for 1499 or get a brand new elite for 2700 out the door through a hook up at magnolia. i was just wondering if the difference in price is worth it. looking at the pics at the avs forums i really cant tell the difference between the two. i've researched both sets and i just wanted some real user feedback on how they like whichever set they own. thanks in advance for any suggestions or advice.

Why are you returning the Hitachi? If you have the dough go for the 111. Dang I wish I was in San Fran, that open box 5020 would look nice in my rec room!

hey wafi,
I'm returning the hitachi because i can't get over that line bleed issue. its very apparent during out doors or bright scenes. i have the money for the 111 because i just sold my mountain bike. i believe that all best buys have lowered the price of their open boxed 5020 to 1499. the last two best buys i went to in my area had them on clearance for that price.

If you dont plan on getting something new anytime soon [say 5 years or so] then I would suggest to go with the 111. If you are gonna get it why not get the best [2008's best] that Pioneer has to offer, that or the 500M [2009's best] online if you can. I hear 500Ms go for less than 2Gs at the moment.

hmmm...i haven't looked into the 500m. I just got back from Magnolia Audio Video and out the door its gonna cost me $2756.26. Ouch. Free shipping to my home though so that's great. Well, heres hoping it'll be worth it.

Hate to burst your bubble but you should def look into a 3-4 year warranty...given the fact that the Kuro is a pricey toy!

PS Its worth it! Think the Hitachi x50 as far as PQ is concerned! And the build on these puppies I tell you..makes the Pannys, Sammy & the Sonys look fragile!

I love my Pioneer Elite Kuro PRO-111FD and I paid only about $400 less than the original $5000 list last year in July. I still think that it was worth the price especially for having and enjoying it so long before the big price drop. It is the best TV that I have ever owned without question.

You should be ecstatic for the quality of the set at $2700 though you may still consider that expensive. And do get the extended 3 or 4 year warranty.

It isn't that it is not enough, it is that a replacement panel for one of these is really expensive. It is your call, but to me it was worth the expense because a panel or anything else that goes on the set will be warrantied for 4 or 5 years.

No problems whatsoeva mate...and you are correct, when it comes to not coming across any problems on Kuros. But do you really wanna go into this transaction and not consider backing it up with a warranty? Its your choice. I personally am risk averse and would rather have it [the warranty] and not use it then not have it....if you knw what I mean! Something else to ponder on...why dont you ask around [here and at avs] about how many Kuro owners might have warranties on their Pio PDPs. Btw I'm not saying you should get a warranty just cos we have warranties, just suggesting it would be more prudent to play it safe.

First off, BB doesn't sell extended warranties. It is a service plan agreement and it may or may not be worth it. Pioneer Plasmas have a 3% error rate and from my experience very rarely does a Pioneer get returned. That is why the televisions are so expensive.

If getting the service agreement gives you a peace of mind do it. If you can a Pioneer new in the box, then go for it. You can't go wrong any why you think of it..

I know everyone is saying "Get the 111" and I know why..... it's pretty much the best display out there.

With that said..... the other is no slouch, and there is a BIG difference between $1,400 and $2,700....

$1,300 is a lot left over..... just think....

you could

1) find another open box and get TWO displays

2) buy a new Amp

3) buy a new turntable

4) buy a pretty decent subwoofer

5) Buy some small electronic contraption for the kitchen..... wives love those

6) Take a nice unexpected vacation.

Notice I didn't say "buy a ton of movies" I've never really looked at that as a good way to spend a big hunk of cash.... since it's best to just pick them up slowly as you find sales.... or rent.... depending on what your thing is!

The 111 is the top dog... no doubt about it..... but $1,300 is $1,300..... Of course in an online forum people tell you to blow the entire budget..... but if it were me, I'd look at things to spend the leftover cash on..... maybe some new theater seats with bass-shakers

EDIT:

I also realize I have NO IDEA what gear you have now

You'll get a warranty.... and from my experience with electronics in general..... if something is going to go wrong.... it usually happens in the first 6 months, or after 5+ years....

Beta Man,
I feel you on spending $1300 on other stuff. I feel iffy about buying a tv used though.

I purchased a Panasonic Tau 32" HD ready CRT floor model in about 2002. I have never had an issue or any problem with the TV in all of this time. It was my main TV in my living room until September of 2008 when it was replaced with my Pioneer Elite Kuro PRO 111-FD. The Panasonic is still used frequently in the master bedroom without any problem.
