So, surprisingly, this and Flower and Snake are available now direct from Impulse Pictures. I ordered both of them on the 16th of October and they were shipped almost immediately by Synapse. I was so caught off guard by this that once I received the Blu-rays, I actually reached out to Synapse to make sure it was okay to talk about these discs so early, and I received the okay from them today.

Of the two titles, Zoom Up: Rape Site was the one I liked less. I should say that I am not into depictions of violent, non-consensual sex in erotica, and while the acts here are usually more frenetic and sloppy than aggressive and determined, I prefer to see scenes where women are, if anything, discovering new things about themselves by pushing boundaries, as opposed to simply being killed for the pleasure of a man. That said, beyond the kills there are several consensual sex scenes and perhaps I'm just jaded, but the film really wasn't as unpleasant as I expected from its title. The rapes also often involved a sort of taboo voyeurism by outside parties as well, which I found interesting. The story is somewhat intriguing, and there is a totally awesome glimpse into a Japanese grocer circa 1979 (look for the Coke bottles) but the mystery aspect is ineffective and the ending is abrupt and unsatisfying. Despite some good-looking women, I just wasn't as involved with this one as I wanted to be.

The picture quality is good, and I noted the more modern Nikkastu logo (the orange "N" inside a red disc against a blue background with white streaks) but, especially during frequent nighttime scenes, the picture seemed to have some black crush at times. Also, the audio was fairly sibilant at times, though never to the point of hampering the listening experience.

Let me also say that I appreciated Impulse providing a reversible cover with the film's original English title and especially, the uncensored artwork. It seems that after uncensored VHS, LD and even early DVD covers, now even the Japanese Blu-rays and later DVDs are censoring original poster art for the video covers, usually to obfuscate or cover up women's nipples, resulting in a rather cheesy "barbie doll"-like appearance for many cover girls, so it's nice for the ladies to get their nipples back for this one, and perhaps Impulse could continue to provide uncensored artwork on future Roman Porno Blu-rays when possible.

I don't believe there is any modern optical blurring. There may be one or two instances of "analog" optical censorship which was done to the film itself by the filmmakers in order to keep the film in line with the obscenity laws of the time. But as I explained in my other reply, if it is there, it would be part of the original film, not something added after the fact, so the Synapse disc is as uncensored as the film will ever get.
