Default Want widescreen DVD on component!

Hello,

so I have recently bought a PS3 and am using component cables because with my TV, I really won't gain any advantage by paying for HDMI. It was all working great until I tried watching a DVD.

I understand that due to right and whatnot I can't upconvert my DVD. Sure, ok, I get it. But is it too much to ask to have my DVD widescreen? Two widescreen films of mine: One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and Kill Bill Vol. 1 both are jamed into a windowboxed picture. I have changed the upconverting options to everything, altered widescreen controls, etc.

I don't see how allowing my widescreen films to fit my whole screen is violating their upconverting rule? I toss the same disc into my Xbox a minute later and bam, I've got a full letterboxed picture, the bars on top and bottom as usual but thankful no bars on the left and right. Not only that but I can change the picture output on the fly.

Why is it that the PS3 demands you leave playback to change these options and then refuses to allow DVDs out of windowboxing without HDMI? It's clearly capable of doing so if the 360 is, it just feels like a nasty burn that I now have to run out and buy an HDMI cable in order to play all of my movies on one player.

Can anyone help/shed some light on this?
