Exclusive: ‘Parasite’s Choi Woo-sik to Star in A24’s Korean Romance ‘Past Lives’

Parasite star Choi Woo-sik, who plays the main family’s son Kim Ki-woo in Bong Joon-ho‘s Oscar-nominated thriller, is set to star in A24’s Korean romance Past Lives, Collider has exclusively learned.

The film is described as an original love story about childhood sweethearts who meet in Korea and live parallel lives until they reunite and see what could have been years later.

The project hails from writer-director Celine Song, and Oscar winner Scott Rudin (No Country for Old Men) is producing with Eli Bush (Lady Bird). Production is slated to start this spring. A24 declined to comment and directed inquiries to Rudin.

Choi was a well-known TV star in Korea before making the leap to local features, and the handsome 29-year-old actor’s big screen credits include director Bong’s Okja, as well as the cult favorite Train to Busan. It may not be long before he’s signed by an agency that recognizes his clear crossover appeal.

What are we guessing on a release date? Hopefully later this spring?

I wonder how long A24 will hold onto this, knowing it could be their big Oscar movie already this early in the year.

Went to see it yesterday and what a beautiful film that demonstrates what a wonderfully versatile and eclectic distributor A24 is. The reviews from people saying it needs to be in talks for best of the year are spot on here.

This is without a doubt going to make a lot of year-end "Best of the Year" lists, and deservedly so.

Celine Song's directorial debut, an autobiographical look at romantic relationships across cultural divides, is an absolute knockout with really fabulous performances, excellent staging, divine cinematography, that is also really well scored.

All of the stars - Greta Lee, Teo Yoo and John Magaro, are absolutely stellar. This is one of those movies where, great dialogue aside, there is so much that is conveyed by body language, by an awkward glance here and there, by a moment of strategic silence. The movie proves it can be both eloquent and subtle in equal measure, and it gives us one of the greatest romantic triangles that we've seen in a very long time.

I really hope A24 will have another huge hit in its hands, and that this movie will find an audience here and in Korea, and hopefully stay in theaters throughout the summer season. It deserves no less.

This isn't playing anywhere near me, unfortunately. Usually it's not that rare to find Korean films playing in my area.

Doesn't A24 usually have info on their website about when and where their movies will be opening?

I'm sure they will be adding more screens just as soon as they can.

Really hope you can watch this soon, it's absolutely wonderful.
