Default What's up with 007 Never Say Never Again?

Just got this from Amazon as part of the B2G1 promo with Moonraker and Goldfinger, and noticed it does not match the same style and design of the previous Bond releases on Blu (as far as the case is concerned... I haven't popped it in the player to see if it has the same menu designs).

Any idea what's up with this release? Why the inconsistency? And when will we see the remaining Bond films on Blu? (By my count, there are 8 unreleased.)

NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN is an unofficial Bond film. It wasn't produced by EON Productions, the company that produced the 22 official films, but rather by Kevin McClory and Warner Bros.

It's not an official Bond film, it was done by a non-MGM studio.

What they ^ said. The Wiki link above is good to read. You should also check out the bonus material on the disc, where the producers and cast describe their first-person accounts of the whole issue.

Ironically, Never Say Never Again is now also controlled by MGM. They got the rights when they acquired Orion back in the late 90s.

NSNA wasn’t part of the official Bond series (i.e. the films produced by EON).

I hope we’ll see the remaining Bond films on Blu-ray soon, and I’d love to see a box set containing all of the official films so far. It would be pricy, but well worth it.

Yup, even in all of the previous DVD box sets (Ultimate Bond DVD and the earlier versions as well), NSNA was not included.

Yep, it was the "Battle of the Bonds", or at least that's what the marketing hype wanted you to believe....

Gotcha. Thanks for all the replies. Completely forgot there was an unofficial Bond film, but this jogged my memory. For a second there I was concerned that they changed up the artwork on these releases. I like that all the pre-Daniel Craig Bond films match up nicely on my shelf.

I'd really like Octo***** and A View to a Kill next.

I always thought it was funny that MGM DVD didn't have and MGM logos on it

NSNA is sort of a superman Returns type of entry in the bond series, it's meant to follow diamonds are forever in bond continuity, completley ignoring the roger moore films as well as i guess now every movie after 1971

After Diamonds Are Forever we are meant to assume that Bond Retired and that M, Q and other characters also retired in that time and were replaced with successors. NSNA picks up with James bond 12 years after his retirement (in 1983), where he is brought back into Mi6 by the new Q

It's a pretty neat idea, it was done because producers only had the right to remake thunderball and not to any of the rest of the series and characters, but IMO its at least a clever idea to try and meld an unofficial Bond movie into the continuiuty of the official series (even if it ignores every adventure after diamonds are forever)

In many ways it films like a fan film, only with the rel orginal actor and not someone playing the original actor, and although its weak film in a lot of ways, it does somewhat give Sean connery a nice finish to the character he helped create... It's too bad there can't be another unofficial Bond film staring tim Dalton... now theres a bond actor i'd pay to see return to the role all these years later

I don't even shelf this movie next to my other Bond movies since it is not an official film.

Yeah it is a remake of it.
I also heard that Jack Schwartzman wanted to remake it one more time but EON put a stop to that.

As others have said, it's not one of the "official" Bond movies.

Never say never again may not be an official Bond movie but it is a good bond movie of eighties. Hope to see quality blu-ray treatment. Tomatoes has given 64% rating.

I wish the CR & QOS covers matched the others.

C.O.B, out.

But CASINO ROYALE and Quantum of Solace are part of the OO7 reboot so obviously they'll have different designs for the covers.
I knew about the Never Say Never Again branch-off/Non-EON when I was a kid. Of course when I buy it it'll go after the "official" EON productions.
