Thank god. I've been waiting for a remake of Papillon for what seems like forever.

Don't mind that it's being remade, but there is no one alive who is half as cool as Steve McQueen, so good luck to whoever gets his role.

As a huge McQueen fan who owns the film on Blu Ray and am really diggin' Mr. Robot's Rami Malek...I just have to ask.....WHY?
Seriously, this is the -insert McQueen/Prison/Hoffman/70s- film that needs remade? |

I think it's due for a remake, when I read the book I just didn't picture Steve McQueen in the lead. After all this time I don't remember the book, but I remember thinking the film didn't resemble the book that much. The remake will probably be pants, but it could be really good.

I'm just happy that the word "remake" is used in the title of the thread instead of "reboot". It always grates on me when "reboot" is applied to a new version of a movie that is not part of a series. (See the "Ben-Hur reboot" thread as an example).

I picked up the original Papillon as a Birthday present to myself. It was one of those films I saw once and didn't think I'd want to bother owning, but something about it stuck with me and I wanted to see it again. I'm glad I did--on the second watch, I realized it was phenomenal. It's more than a gritty prison drama, it's an expression of liberation.
So, no, I don't think a remake is warranted at all. Who in Hollywood keeps greenlighting these remakes anyway? Who in their right mind thought a remade Ben Hur, Footloose, Point Break, Red Dawn, and this could garner a willing audience? If they decide to remake my favorite classic, I might throw a sh*t fit, because this trend is genuinely ridiculous. Last edited by Al_The_Strange; 08-04-2016 at 03:52 PM. |

For me, the most important thing this remake WON'T have is a score anywhere near as beautiful and perfect as what Jerry Goldsmith did in the 1973 version.
Who's writing scores these days as great as the score to PAPILLON? Answer: No one. |

I actually approve, IF its an adult movie with complete accuracy and no needless (political) changes.
The original film is excellent, thrilling and haunting, this could be even better with a strong cast and updated visuals. Daniel-Day Lewis, Christoph Waltz and Russell Crowe spring to mind straight away for roles. |
