I'm just wondering if anybody out there with some knowledge on the history of animation and how animation is created, can tell me whether the state in which The Simpsons was created at the very beginning would mean the show could be re-mastered in high definition for Blu-ray?
Was the animation film based back then? which might means a high resolution master? Or am i completely off base? I don't know much on the subject of film, HD cameras etc, but i imagine that it might not be possible for episodes of the simpsons from the earlier years to be put into HD, and DVD is in fact the best these will ever look. Can anyone correct me if i'm wrong, or shed a little light on the possibility? cheers |

I think that regardless of how a film or animated series was made or what medium used to film and record, all can be remastered for optimal viewing in HD. Now do you mean the Simpsons when they were on the Tracy Ullman Show or when they were on Fox?

Thanks for the reply mate...
I just mean with Fox, season 1 upwards. I'm so unfamilar with the basic rules of HD mastering. So you actually say that it is possible that even the animation from 1989 (classic Simpsons) could actually be mastered in HD for eventual broadcast and Blu-ray release? |

"The Simpsons Movie" will definitely be first on Blu-Ray.
As for the series on Blu-Ray, God only knows. Jodi |

The simpsons are currently broadcast in 4:3 on FOX HD channels. I'm not saying it would be impossible to make it 16:9, just time consuming. Antimation in the US has yet to shift their paradigm to widescreen, unlike Japan which has had widescreen based anime for years. BTW: I have from the earth to the moon on dvd, "re-mastered for widescreen." It was a 4:3 filmed series, and they chopped the top off often to make it work. I wish I had gotten the orginal 4:3 version because the 16:9 just looked screwed up in comparison. I would just assume have like seven seasons of SD simpsons on a BD50.

If the Simpsons series or episodes were filmed and edited on film, a Blu-ray high definition version will look better.
If it was mastered/edited on Standard Definition video, they could upscale that to HD size and it might look a little cleaner (As the SD master might have better color resolution and less noise/compression than a DVD) but not a difference of night and day. (This goes for all edited masters that exist only on video). Also the upscaler/resharpening filter could be top notch (I have an upscaler filter that looks subjectively about almost twice as good as Photoshop's bicubic), or not. Quote:

Simpsons didn't even start being done in highdef until very recently, either 14 or 16 I forget which.
They wouldn't release anything prior to that. It's a waste And they're not going to start consolidating 3 DVD-9s to 1 BD-25 either. People won't pay $50 for 1 disc. It's a percieved value thing. Last edited by WickyWoo; 07-04-2007 at 05:21 AM. |

Like someone already stated, it's a given that the movie will definitely be out but I don't know about the series.
