Default confused on 3-D Blu-ray?

well after watching avatar in 3d in the theaters tonight, i would really like to see this and others on my home theater.

so is it just the bluray player that will need to be updated or is it the tv.

i dont really have any time to research it till after xmas but if any one has any really helpful links much appreciated

From what I understand both the TV and Bluray players need to support 3D, but don't hold me to that. I believe I saw on here somewhere that the PS3 will have an update giving it support for 3D movies. I don't even know if there are any 3D TVs out for consumers. Maybe when they are more common the old outdated 2D LCDs will drop in prices even more! I'll keep my 32" for ahwile longer and keep my fingers crossed that I will soon pick up a 52" Sony Bravia for half the price they are right now.

From my limited knowledge, I don't think the TV needs to be 3D capable, as there really aren't any out right now, yet there are a few 3D blu's available. The image displayed on theater screen is the same as what will be displayed on your TV, you just need the 3D glasses to get the effect

Can't wait for Avatar on blu, especially the 3D one that Cameron is thinking of releasing in late 2010

Looks like you need a 3D ready TV. There seems to be a decent amount out already though.

I thought that you need a new 3D capable display. One that can display 2 different HDMI inputs. Isn't that how present 3D tech works? Basically 2 different images being projected which gives the 3D effect. In older setups, 2 separate projectors were used, but newer projectors can emit both images at the same time.

Now Cameron did say it will be a while before Blu-ray will have a 3D version of this film. With a standard version being released first with NO 3D. It probably won't be available till 3D tech is readily available. Which could be a few years from now. There may also be a premium cost associated. Remember Laser Disc prices.

Not sure about the PS3 either, as I am almost certain that the existing PS3 only has 1 HDMI output and needs 2 for displaying 3D. Maybe with HDMI 1.4 tech coming, but again the PS3 only has 1.3, so don't know how a firmware update will fix the hardware issues.

Anyone know the answer to this?

Yes you do need to have a 3D capable player and TV. The TV's require 240hz refresh rate for 3D....There are a few tv's out there now, but they are very expensive, but companys are saying they want to push this technology in 2010 so look for more 3D-1080/24p tv's and players then. Rumor's I have heard is sony wants to pre-shoot some sporting events to show in 3D, which that would be kind of neat, and how awesome would 3D gaming be!

So what I am getting from this article is this: You need a 3-D capable HDTV to watch 3-D movies? Thats funny because I watched Journey To The Center Of The Earth in 3-D along with My Bloody Valintine and I had to wear the glasses and it was in 3-D. I find it hard to believe that if you have the 3-D glasses you will have to buy a new tv. I could be wrong on that as well but I aint gonna buy a new tv just for 3-D. I will spend that money on a new sound system instead.

Does it say "3d ready" on the TV? Most 120hz TVs that just say 120hz won't accept 120hz inputs.

I'd wait a bit because most of 3D full HD TVs - which I think will be HDMI 1.4 compatible, will be coming out in the first few months of next year.

They're anaglyph 3D. The new type of 3D is supposed to be better.

As has been posted before, BD 3D will use 1080p48 or 1080p120 signals, with each eye appearing in alternating frames. 1080p48 (the most common as it's double 1080p24) is definitely within the PS3's capabilities; it will *NOT* need two HDMI outputs, and it will *NOT* need HDMI 1.4.

However, new TVs will be necessary to display the picture in 3-D. Even existing 120Hz & higher sets do *NOT* have the technology (other than anaglyph) to deliver a separate picture to each eye; that will require special displays (and more than likely glasses, though some say they won't need them). Besides, no HDMI connection today delivers more than 60Hz; 120Hz is important only as the common denominator of both 24 & 60, and 240Hz, etc. is just marketing hype.

Current TVs will play 3D content that uses the red/blue glasses ("anaglyph" I think). Also, all current DVD players and/or BD players can also handle this style of 3D presentation since the rendering is recorded on the disc as a seperate video file.

For the high quality 3D effect currently used in IMAX and digital projection theatres ("lenticular" I believe), the TV will require an upgrade. The newest standard for future BD 3D was just recently established and should start rolling out this summer/fall in electronics.

The PS3 has already been confirmed as being able to meet the recently established 3D standard via a simple firmware update. I haven't heard anything about other BD players though. However, I imagine that their lack of on-board memory by comparison with the PS3, it is highly unlikely that they will be able to support the new standard.

Have you been to the theatre to watch a 3D presentation? The titles you mention in your post use the blue/red lenses with an anaglyph encode of the video presentation. The theatre 3D glasses have clear lenses which do not affect your vision at all when looking through them in ANY situation... look at your friend next to you and it's as if you are looking through plain glass lenses. They both have completely different techniques in handling the 3D process.

For 24p in 3D, a 240Hz TV will be as important as a 120Hz (or other 24p multiple) TV is today for 2D.

The 3-D that is offered now on select Blu-ray's is in no way the same 3-D tech used in theaters. It's FAR more advanced than the cheap 3-D techniques used for current home use.
