Default Planet Earth

I just bought a copy of Planet Earth from Amazon and the back of the box says it is 1080i. Isn't Planet Earth supposed to be in 1080p?

If you bought the UK version with 5 discs, the 5th disc is in 1080i. Everything else is in 1080p. Might be a printing error, nothing more.

It should be presented in 1080p. Except for the extras, which are ported from the DVD. I'm sure your tv will recognize it as being 1080p.

There are 2 different versions in the US... The Discovery Channel version with Sigourney Weaver is 1080i and the BBC version with David Attenborough is 1080p...

I didn't think about that. I was referring to the BBC Blu. I forgot about the Sigourney version.

Could have sworn only the Discovery Channel version was the only one in 1080i... Can you play the disc and check?... Could be an error on the case, which happens sometimes...

I just checked my Planet Earth BBC 5 disc set, the box most certainly says 1080i. I played for a moment discs 1 -3, it displayed as 1080p. Discs 4 and 5 were displayed as 1080i.

This is the set that I have

How about the PQ of Planet Earth? Wish to find out a comparison with Baraka. I have heard that Planet Earth has been shot on first generation HD video cameras. Has it been shot on 24P cameras or has it been post converted to 24P.

I'm not sure about the 24p. Is there a way to tell?

I have the one with David Attenborough and it says 1080i on the box.
I put disk 1 and 3 in and hit display on my TV remote and it says 1080/24p.
Not sure if it is 1080i or p though

I have both BR's and Baraka (audio/video) is noticably better.

I have the 4 disc BBC version with Attenborough. The box and the back cover both say 1080i on them. SO...i have just always assumed that Planet Earth was done in 1080i.

To go along with the original post...Are the Planet Earth discs actually in 1080p and my box and art are incorrect, or did I purchase a lesser version of Planet earth (are there actually 1080i blu-rays of this out there?)?

I thought I heard something that it was printed in error.

Planet Earth is 1080i, as are most of the BBC earth presentations. Planet Earth is good, but is the least great of all of the BBC releases, probably because it was indeed shot on first gen HD. Baraka looks far better, but is far shorter.
For sheer wealth of footage you can't go wrong with PE, though I would suggest these others for better PQ:
Wild Pacific, might be biased as the Pacific Islands are my favorite places on Earth, but this release is something special.
Ganges, always been fascinated by India and this release features some excellent rare footage.
Galapagos, another excellent doc.
Wild China, on par with PE PQ wise, but also has some very rare, interesting footage.
Story of India, dense with info and at times a bit wordy but worth the investment.

I think you are correct. It's been a while, but if memory serves there was some forum chatter about this when the series first broke on Blu.

Surprised it hasn't been corrected yet on the box. I watched mine yesterday with the kids, ironically enough.

Planet Earth vs Baraka. Personally, I wouldnt compare them for PQ or AQ.

Baraka wins for AQ no sweat. Comparing a documentary with an Art movie with a moving score just isnt fair. Planet Earths AQ is just fine for what it is designed to do.

PQ is another area where I wouldnt make a comparison. Baraka is a 70mm film and has a beautifull film look. Planet Earth has IMHO an equally beautifull look, albeit very different. PE looks like what it is, a documentary. There are flaws to be found in some of the more difficult to shoot scenes, however, the overall presentation is so fantastic that it is easy for me to forgive these occasional technical anomalies.

Baraka: 5 stars
Planet Earth: 5 stars
