Default PS3 slim component teardown

Engadget already posted a few sources, but iFixit's always a good place to start.

Many, many, many more pics there.

MEGA FAN revealed!
This 12V, 1.3A monster rivals the best fans found in desktop PC machines. Sony spared no expense.
This is the largest fan we've come across in a consumer electronics device of this size.
Sony is really taking cooling quite seriously.
The ~95 mm diameter 17 blade impeller was definitely designed with quiet in mind. It is extremely stiff and presumably made of ABS plastic.

Loving the tear down, it looks like the HSF is really taking up a large chunk of space in there so they are still taking heat seriously which is great to see.

To be honest i just feel immensly happy that after 2 months of telling nay saysers who came out with stuff like "its not possible" & "why would they", that it is here and its as any reasonable thinker suspected. It was still a little bit of a "oh my god, they actually did it" moment for me several days later though!

Great for Sony and not bad for my ego either.

No so ironic since Toshiba was producing the boards for PS3's way back when the format war was taking place.

The enclosure for the Blu-ray drive looks very different, which may mean that they are using a different laser.

It's a whole new drive! Made by Optiarc, or what remains of it since Sony took it over.

Completely different, new optics, cheaper b/v diode, generally smaller.

Grrr,... Off topic, but inspired by the different laser assembly,

I wonder how many spare lasers I should buy for my 60GB PS3.

The Laser and the hard drive seems like the only moving parts and the only things that will eventually fail. Hard drive is easy enough to replace and will remain available but I suppose the future of the laser could be in doubt.

My 60GB system does things that most other PS3's including the slim can not do like plays SACDs and it has PS2 hardware. I love it and want it to be use-able for the remainder of my days so I guess I better fill a box with spare laser diodes while they are still around.

why do you guyz think that because it's smaller that there MAY be a greater chance of failure. I'm confused as to what your logic is behind that. Myabe someone that is a little bit more tech savy then me can explain it to me.

I think the opposite. Many of the fat PS3 hardware problems stemmed from overheating (except the Blu-Ray laser). This smaller PS3 uses a third the power and thus generates a lot less heat then the fat. Also, the fat PS3 can be used by Sony as a sort of "trial run" for the new slim, they know what did work, and what worked not so well. Also, technology has advanced since then, maybe the Blu-Ray drive in the slim has better hardware in it as well to reduce laser failures.

It remains to be seen whether or not it's more reliable, but I'd be willing to bet a pretty large amount of money ($10) that the slim is even more reliable than any of the fat PS3 models.
