Post Biggest films not released on Blu-ray

I have put these lists together simply to promote the fact that there are some rather popular films that have still not been released on Blu-ray in the UK. Upon (hopefully) having the powers that be see these lists, steps may well be taken to make them shorter!

There is obviously no one criteria that says how 'big' a film is, but I do think using the IMDb rankings - by vote number not by popularity, which fluctuates rapidly - has more positives than negatives. I think it generally strikes a good balance between 'blockbusters' and 'classics' although obviously there are more of the former in the last few decades, and more of the latter in the earlier decades.

This is a link to the IMDb list for 1950.

Big British Films by Admissions

Due to the fact that IMDb is an American website with a global audience, British films are not that represented using the 'Number of Votes' criteria.

To address this I have looked at the Top 25 British Productions list calculated by the British Film Institute and recorded on Wikipedia here. These only look at sound films, but I have also included our most watched silent film (which remains unreleased on Blu-ray despite it being a UNESCO 'Document of Worldwide Historical Significance'). Of the 25 films in this list, nine are unreleased.

To put these figures into perspective, our population in 1950 was 50 million.

Code:
Spring In Park Lane - 1949 - 20.50 million admissions
The Wicked Lady - 1945 - 18.40m
The Seventh Veil - 1945 - 17.90m
The Courtney's Of Curzon Street - 1947 - 15.90m
Doctor In The House - 1954 - 12.20m
Fanny By Gaslight - 1944 - 11.70m
Piccadilly Incident - 1946 - 11.50m
Carry On Nurse - 1959 - 10.40m
49th Parallel - 1941 - 9.30m

The Battle Of The Somme - 1916 - 20m+
The following six foreign films have also done very well at the UK Box Office, and are not on Blu-ray.

Code:
The Best Years Of Our Life - 1947 - 20.40 million admissions
The Greatest Show On Earth - 1952 - 13.00m
The Great Caruso - 1951 - 12.40m
Random Harvest - 1943 - 12.00m
The Jolson Story - 1947 - 11.60m
Crocodile Dundee - 1986 - 9.80m
I would also like to find some figures or list of British films that did big over the last few decades (from say the 1970s onwards). But I can't find one. Please help!

The only thing I could find is this list from the BFI on Wikipedia that ranks British films with earnings of over £10 million since 1989, which due to the benchmark set is heavily weighted towards films released in the last decade.

Of the 13 films listed, two have not been released on Blu-ray:

Code:
Shirley Valentine - 1989 - £11.5m gross
Kevin & Perry Go Large - 2000 - £10.5m

Really good list but I think there’s a couple on there that are available (or going to be).

L’Age D’Or has a BFI release.

Killer’s Kiss is an extra in Arrow’s The Killing.

Elevator to the Gallows (titled Lift to the Scaffold over here) is in the Louis Malle set from Artificial Eye.

Shoot the Piano Player (called Shoot the Pianist over here) was released but looks like it may be OOP now.

Five Easy Pieces is coming out from Criteron November 16th but for some reason doesn’t have an entry yet.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Five-Easy-P...9918892&sr=8-1

Mirror has been released by Artificial Eye.

Yeah, 2020 & still no Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid

There's quite a few titles on that list that have been released on Blu-ray, here's 10 favourites from the list that haven't:

Gold Diggers Of 1933
Arsenic And Old Lace
The Roaring Twenties
The Greatest Show On Earth
Ivanhoe
Scaramouche
The Alamo
The Hill
Paint Your Wagon
Catch-22

(that's 6 from Warner, 3 from Paramount & 1 from MGM)

Oh well, let's see what next year brings.

This is only in standard definition though, as far as I'm aware?

Unless the BFI ever does a boxed set of the Thames Silents that's probably the best we can expect.

Is it on the normal one or just the limited edition one with the statue?

I just reread the first post, and now I see that you are only looking for UK releases. So you can ignore my post above (but it might be interesting to know that the Warner and Fox releases are region free).

This should indeed really not be in the North America section, as you are not talking about North American releases.
