Whoa, I totally missed the Blu-ray release of Hound of the Baskervilles (1977), a criminally underrated film. Flawed, certainly, but there are a lot of guffaws to be had therein. The one-legged runner bit, the light signaling bit, and the Denholm Elliott puppy bit are three of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. And Dudley Moore’s piano score is perfection. And then there’s this gem:

“Fog on the moors, clear skies indoors.
Fog in the house, sun’s out for field mouse.”

The DVD's of

Murder By Decree (1979),
The Sign of Four (1983)
The Hound of the Baskervilles (1983)

offer better picture quality than the blu-rays.
A sad fact, but the blu-rays are totally botched.

Which movies would you recommend for a beginner of Holmes on film? I don't believe I've seen any.

If the Jeremy Brett series is still available in season discs, I would recommend that. Sign of the Four.

I highly recommend the Jeremy Brett series particularly
season 1, season 2 and The Sign of the Four. But don't
watch them on youtube, the picture quality is muddy
and blurry. Get the season sets. The season sets are
new pristine transfers of the 16mm OCN. If I remember
correctly The Sign of the Four was the only film shot in
35mm. I'll have to check that. It looks splendid, though.

I can't imagine having no acquaintance with Mr. Holmes
and Dr. Watson.

I'm really fond of The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes,
but it's best understood after you've read a few of the
short stories and watched some of the straight-forward
films. The first 30 minutes is a comedy but the next 96
minutes is a romantic suspense mystery.

of an irascible disgruntled Sherlock Holmes.

The gag about liking to "strike a happy medium" is so eye-rollingly awful that it's one of my favorites in all of filmdom. Busts me up every time.

Cushing’s performance in the Hammer Hound is still the finest portrayal of Holmes on large or small screen IMO. I’d put Downey Jr. at or near the bottom. Jude Law would have been a much better choice for Holmes.

Does Sherlock Hound count? Kinda loosely based on the characters and its a very fun series for both kids and adults.

The Jeremy Brett and Peter Cushing versions are the best imo. They take some artistic liberties with how they portray Holmes compared to the books, but are both enjoyable for what they bring to the character.

Many of the other portrayals are kind of "samey" with the standard issue Holmes acting.

I wish that Nicholas Meyer would make Sherlock Holmes
films. Perfect director for the genre. He directed The Day
After, Time After Time, rescued Star Trek with The Wrath
of Khan and has written several traditional outstanding
Sherlock Holmes novels. He could do for Holmes what he
did for Star Trek.

NOOOOO! As a Holmes fan, I got this several years back with great anticipation, but it was a real bore. The annotations are from a perspective that the characters and adventures actually happened, and you have "Watson" re-arranging, retro-fitting and clarifying Holmes trivia. After an early point, I just read the stories without looking at the annotations.

I'm more a Brett fan, although Cushing does deserve credit for first bringing in the moody irascible aspect of Holmes. I also love the long-running BBC radio program (1952-69) with Carleton Hobbs as Holmes and Norman Shelley as Watson - they were very faithful to ACD's text.
I see the Downey-Law movies more as Victorian buddy action films than as Holmes pictures. Law did make Watson more sexy than the avuncular figure represented in most previous versions, and he seemed to enjoy the part.

The Memoirs season is hard for me to sit through, primarily because Jeremy was in such terrible shape on account of his illness.

But I did like the liberal adaptation of The Eligible Bachelor from their Casebook season, a much more dramatic and interesting film than the humdrum source story.
