United Kingdom Dream Horse - Toni Collette - September 13th 2021

Just came back from the cinema seeing this. Really enjoyable crowd pleaser that put a smile on my face with a motivational true life story about a Welsh supermarket checkout clerk played by Toni Collette who ends up breeding a race horse, Dream Alliance, to success at the races. The cast is full of lots of familiar faces from the UK and Welsh film industry. Even though I’m not into horse racing I still got invested in the story about overcoming crushed dreams and mediocre jobs.

Bleecker Street has the US rights so unsure if it will get a Blu-ray in that market from Universal, but Warner Bros are releasing a UK Blu-ray in September, although I would recommend the cinema trip if you’re able to.

Quote:
Jan Vokes, a cleaner and bartender, recruits her reluctant husband Brian and local accountant Howard Davies to help her bring together a syndicate of villagers to breed a foal – which they raise on an allotment and name Dream Alliance. On the racetrack, he proves himself to be more than a match for the multi-million-pound race horses he comes up against – a true working-class champion, taking on the establishment at their own game. But much more than this, Dream begins to alter the lives of everyone in the syndicate, not least Jan’s. He is everything to her: friend, confidant and an escape from a life of always putting other people’s needs first.Dream Horse is a classic story of triumph against adversity, and a tale of how a woman strives to make her dream a reality in a place where hope is thin on the ground.

I saw this was coming on Amazon yesterday. I will definitely pick it up since I expect Bleecker Street will bury it here just as they did with Military Wives last year.

Looks like this will now be DVD only, with a placeholder of December 31st. I guess box office returns were disappointing the week after release? Although, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It now has a placeholder of December 31st too.

However, Germany is getting a Blu-ray from Leonine, but not until December 17th.

Christ, Warner...

EDIT: I wonder if Australia will save us? It looks like Sony has it there, so it could come from USPHE or Random Space Media.

That would be preferable to a German release that could have German localization.

It seems to also be dropping out of ODEON/Vue at the end of the week, as they make room for a different WB title, In the Heights. So the film only lasted two weeks in the big chains.
