Default turntable help

i am hoping to get a technics sl-1300 turntable, after doing some research on it it seems to fit my current set up of speakers and amps and is very reasonably priced. but these are an older of turntable and thus i am looking for some advice. i currently have one of those $80 you-can't-replace-anything-on-this turntables from sony. so anything is going to be a step up. i have that turntable hooked into a marantz 2262B receiver which i'm using as an amp and then feeding that into my onkyo sr605. i have been acquiring more and more vinyl lately and love it, particularly the 180 gram records i've found. so i want to make them sound their best without having to upgrade my whole system. does anyone know some relatively inexpensive ways to upgrade the sl-1300? the needle, cartridge, tone arm, etc. any tips on things that may go wrong?

I'm not a lover of Technics TTs, but will readily admit they are very popular and known to be built like tanks. Stanton cartridges are very popular for this table and you can hunt some down at Jerry Raskin's Needle Doctor site.

Trust me when I say I would never steer anyone away from Blu-ray.com, but in this case I would be remiss if I didn't mention a visit to Audiokarma. There is an entire section devoted to Turntables and many threads on Technics TT's.

Congrats on the TT and I hope you enjoy it for years to come!

I just machined my own from 2 1/4 inch stainless shaft at work. 1 1/2 inches tall and weigh a few pounds each. I dampened them further using a 2 1/4 inch circle cutout of 1/16 of an inch thick cork mat from Canadian Tire then finished them off with a layer of Con-Tact foam rubber shelf liner.

Nothing gets through them, considering the 9 dollars in material cost, worth every penny.

Interesting concept CK. Nice to just happen to have a machine shop handy.

Now if you tell us that you got this done on company time you would really rock?
