Default Color Banding

I have a Sony KDL-40v3000 which features a 10-bit processor and a 10-bit panel. I notice some color banding, but only at specific times: when viewing a nighttime sky in an animated movie. Two of the culprits are The Wild and Ice Age 2. Can someone help me with settings to get rid of this?

When looking at the sky, the color changing isn't as smooth as it could be. It looks like bands of colors instead of a gradual fade. Again, this only happens on animated movies. Never on TV, never on live action movies. Makes me wonder if it is my player...

That should help further clarify what color banding is. My TV suffers from this and is especially noticeable on the PS3 menu screen. I've chalked up my situation up to just having an older set. I'm not sure what could be causing yours.

My 3 year old samsung dlp has this issue with dithering, mostly with reds I've noticed. So a professional calibration could fix this?

I wanted to bump this. I am noticing this now on regular television, but only on CGI. Is it possible that the CGI using colors that my television cannot replicate?

My television does not have this option and I played with the rgb/ycbcr settings on the player and didn't notice a difference.

There's not too much you can do about it aside from getting a TV with a higher color bit. The same type of stuff is seen all the time with computer monitors. With My TV I notice it on differnt things where there is a large blank surface of color, mainly with the sky. I see it in both CG movies, TV Shows and normal TVs.

Since I have a 10-bit panel and a 10-bit processor, I don't see that happening any time soon.
