Should i go slim or stay fat?

I have a 40gb ps fatty. I watch a lot of blu's with it. But i was wondering if I were to give my fatty to my son and buy me a slim if it would be a improvement. I dont know what the difference in the slim vs. the fatty in the blu ray watching catagory. I know the one difference if the slim can bitstream and the fatty can't. My reciever is a onkyo txsr805. It is a 1.3 hdmi receiver so I wont have a problem there. So right now my fatty is decoding the the codecs instead of my a/v receiver. But if I get the slim the onkyo will do all the processing. Would I notice a sound difference if the receivere does it instead of the ps3? I posted this question in the ps3 forum but didnt get much response. People there are mostly gamers. You guys are more informative with the blu ray watching. Thanks

I would wait honestly, not always a good idea to get a launch system. I have a non-launch PS3 myself and so far no major problems. Personally, I'm going to get another fat PS3 next year as a back-up system, maybe in November since they'll probably be like $200 on Black Friday.

I agree. I have two fat PS3's (less than a year) and I am happy with both. There always seems to be issues with launch systems.

Well, I can't answer for you, but I can give you what I've seen with my slim so far. I'm coming from a Pioneer 51FD player, and while it was a great player, it was slow to load, and it is only profile 1.1. The picture quality was, to me, a little better than the fat PS3 I had before the Pioneer. I've gone back to the PS3 because it seems to be a do-it-all player that handles any movie thrown at it. The fact that it now bitstreams, which to me sounded better than the old PS3 decoding, is a bonus as well. I've only had my slim for a few days, but I couldn't be happier with my purchase thus far.

I have a 2 and a half year old ps3 fat and no problems so far (knock on wood). I would wait as well on purchasing a slim though. You have a blu-ray player currently, and a good one at that. Wait until the holiday season because there could be some great deals out there. We're so close, why not wait another 2-3 months to save $100.

I would say it would be worth while especially since you don't have a 60gb PS3. Only with the 60gb PS3 you are losing some fairly substantial features. For instance, the 60gb ps3 has 4 usb slots instead of 2, it has full backwards compatiability with ps1 and ps2 games and it also has a built in card reader and ability to play super audio cd's. If I didn't have a 60gb I would be very tempted to get the slim just for the quietness and the fact that it is more energy efficient.

i have a 60gb and im selling it next week to a co worker so i can buy the slim. the main reason is because its alot quieter. my 60 is loud as hell after about 30 mins of usage. when i watch low dialog scenes its very annoying with my 60 gb. the only down side i heard of with the slim is upconverted dvds but im kind of a snob now and i wont watch dvds anymore so thats not a problem lol

I will most likely be picking up the slim later on this year, however I will also keep my 60gb fatty. I am not parting with that thing until it bites the dust

I haven't heard my Slim at all, yet. I've had it on for as much as 8 hours at a time, playing games, streaming music/videos, watching DVDs/Blu-rays all without turning it off. It does get a little warm at the back, but I haven't heard a fan kick on once.

I guess the question is, do you want a second blu-ray player or are you interested because it's new? If it's just to add another blu-ray player then do it, but if because your interested in having the latest and greatest then don't do it.

If you do get the slim and you have the Onkyo 805, I would be concerned with the DTS-Bomb. I really don't know much about it, because my PS3 is doing the decoding and not the 805. If your not sure what I'm talking about, there were a few AVR that had a problem with decoding the DTS-HD. Since the PS3 was doing the decoding I didn't have to investagate the problem or update my Onkyo 805 firmware and you just might have to if you get the slim.

I have a launch PS3 and I'm not giving that up for nothing, even if it goes down I’m having it fixed. The launch PS3 has too many features to give up on to have the latest and greatest that really isn't the greatest.

Unless you need loss less audio bit streaming and/or fan noise is an issue, there is no compelling reason to get a second PS3. If you are into importing blu-rays from a different region, you may consider importing the slim from that region. If you need a second machine, the slim is a very good candidate. PS3 is a great blu-ray player.
