...Ellen DeGeneres.

I guess she broke the news while filming the first episode of her talk show's new season.

Seems like a good replacement for the spot left open by Paula Adbul. A female judge who will never say anything bad, and will actually go out of their way to find something positive to say about every performance.

I'm not sure how she'll fit in with the other judges, but I guess we'll see (because, yes, I secretly watch this show fairly often when it's on).

Wow...really shocked about this....never expected Ellen. I guess I was secretly hoping Paula would come back and they would get rid of Kara or whatever her name is.

What does American Idol have to do with music? It's more of a popularity contest than a singing or musical-ability contest, so I don't think Ellen is really all that out of place.

The success of her show implies she is doing something right, and may know more about what people are interested in than we realize.

Ultimately the show is about ratings, and if she brings ratings, then it was a good move.

She doesn't have to know anything about music to make the show more entertaining, so I'm fine with her as a judge.

And besides, its not like Paula Abdul knew much either, and even if she did, she never showed it.

Seriously, we've all watched the show, and all judges probably work with a little cheat sheet, to glance at when trying to come up with something to say.

Randy/Simon/Kara's cheat-sheet
1) it was pitchy in parts
2) was/wasn't a great song choice

Paula's cheat-sheet
1) nice hair
2) nice outfit

So if Ellen is replacing Paula (which she is), her role is to be the guaranteed-positive judge, and her comments will likely have nothing to do with the music. And even if she does want to criticize the music, it shouldn't matter.

I'm not a professional musician, but I can say that I don't like a particular song. I'm not a director, but I can say I didn't like the direction in a particular movie. All that matters is whether the person being critiqued respects the opinion of the person doing the critiquing, and in this case, I think everyone will respect what Ellen has to say, in the rare event that she might say something negative.

Surprised she has time for this. Isn't her show 5 days a week? I guess she can fit it in though. She's funny to watch too. They should pull a trick on her and have Anne Heche audition.

The worst part about the show last season was that there were 4 judges. Half the show was the judges bickering and hamming it up for the camera. The show is supposed to be about the singing. Not 20 minutes of Paula yammering on, and ten minutes of "What up dog?" and ten minutes of kara trying to figure out what kind of an artist the contestant will be. And the 30 seconds of Simon because he gets cut off. Leave it at three judges. Dont care who, but four is overkill!!

The first time I see her dance, I swear to God I'll explode!! I cannot figure out why people are so fascinated with her dancing. Gets on nerves.

the entire show is just an overblown karaoke contest anyway so who cares if the judge has any musical cred or not.

I never watch the show after all the pathetically ridiculous early contestants are gone and my wife hates it(lucky for me)

That would be a pretty lame trick. Ellen's wife is much hotter than Anne Heche.
