Default my first PSN game

i bought Shatter and i loved it. great boss battles and lots of fun. what other critically acclaimed PSN games are there? i like shooting stuff and loud noises and colors everywhere. i recall some German side scrolling spaceship shooter called Himmelstrummer or Strangenbrugger or something like that. what was the name of it, and is it any good?

It doesn't get any better than Super Stardust HD.

Sounds like Burn Zombie Burn! is right down your alley. Plus you get direct video upload to youtube and custom music in game.

Try WipEout... But yeah, you can't go wrong with Super Stardust HD.

Everyday Shooter still impresses me. Great sound design and truly original gameplay.

truly original is kind of pushing it but it is a great game. It does some new and interesting things with dual stick shooters but it is still very conventional.

I cant recommend super stardust hd enough it is fantastic. I also agree with the wipeout hd recommendation.

I have Soldner-X: Himmersturmer, and I can't honestly recommend it unless you are a seriously hardcore shmup (shoot-em up) fanatic. And even then you might want to think twice.

The game is incredibly difficult - and that's speaking as someone who cut his gaming teeth on arcade games like the original Galaga, Gyruss, and 1942/1943 which were designed to make you lose.

Super Stardust HD is simply the best shmup experience you will have on a gaming console, period. It's graphically intense, has the most fluid controls I've ever seen, and difficult-but-not-impossible gameplay that scales up in difficulty at a very even pace. GET IT, you will not be disappointed.

Regarding Shatter, it's easily one of the best Breakout-style games I've ever played, though I still have a very soft spot for the original arcade version of Arkanoid, which in my mind to this day still has the best control scheme ever for such games (the control dial padde).

Agreed. I am a big fan of side-scrollers (meaning I've played a LOT of them) and this game is murder. Even the first level is taxing if you're trying to go for high scores.

For PSN games, I'd whole-heartedly recommend, in no particular order:

Magic Ball
PixelJunk Monsters
WipEout HD + Fury
ZEN Pinball
Fat Princess
Marvel vs Capcom 2
Crystal Defenders
High Velocity Bowling
Worms
Age of Booty
Super Stardust HD
Calling All Cars
Echochrome
NovaStrike
Soldner-X: Himmelssturmer

i bought Super Stardust and it is awesome. what a fun and intense game. just got the 10x multiplier trophy last night. i made it to phase 5 of the last planet with 9 extra ships, and they were all gone in about 3 minutes. not sure if i will ever beat that last boss level. way too many ateriods and missiles coming out of nowhere. and as for soldner-x...i think i'll stay away. thanks for all the recommendations (and warnings.)

The final boss is actually pretty easy if you know what you are doing. You should be able to do it with only dying maybe 1-2 times. The key is basically just to focus on the boss only and avoid dealing with the asteroids (because the asteroids are basically infinite). You can hover pretty close to the boss without crashing and that will limit the number of asteroids you have to deal with. Also, stockpile bombs going into the fight. Releasing bombs when the boss is vulnerable makes the boss really easy and also clears out nearby asteroids at the same time. Also, IIRC if you hit the boss's vulnerable spots none of the missles will fire at you. They will only fire at the planet.
