Default Disney movies on XBOX LIVE marketplace.

This is a interesting developement, although it doesnt mean that much, i found it interesting to start a thread. Did i mention that all the movies will be in high-definition.....

Eh...means nothing for HD DVD. XBL has features they like, unlike HD DVD.

Default Microsoft announces Disney movies in HD on Xbox Live right....now

This is just in and I was reading this on engadgethd.com

"Microsoft's E3 conference is still ongoing, but they were more than happy to note that Xbox Live Video Marketplace has already raked in more than $125 million in revenue, and is bigger than any cable providers' VOD offerings. As if that wasn't enough, for everyone who thought Blu-ray would be their only option for Disney films in HD, Microsoft announced that it is bringing both catalog and new releases to Xbox Live, in high definition, starting tonight. Our friends outside the U.S. have something to look forward to as well, because it plans to bring the video marketplace to Canada & Europe by the end of this year."

To me I don't know how this is going to impact Blu-Ray, I doubt it will do much since I personnely would never download a 15-25GB movie from the internet. I would think this will not be very successful. I guess all of the Dud fans will probably be somewhat happy that Disney is coming to the Xbox. I think its Sony to using their pocket books to avoid stuff like this from happening. Obvuosly M$ plays dirty and it isn't a surprise to me that this has happened.

What does VOD have to do with Blu-Ray or HD-DVD? Nothing.

I personally think they are two different formats and/or marketplace. Just because Disney supports Xbox Live VOD doesnt mean they are abandoning Blu-Ray. This news is like Disney releasing HD conent on directv's pay-per-view. Same thing.

Disney has already released downloadable movies on sites like itunes I believe. This is nothing new. Though I'm sure a lot of uneducated hd-dud fanbois will be crowing about this being a sign of Disney going neutral.

Disney never said they wouldn't support VOD, only HD DVD, partially because the formats less capable than BD and partially because they don't want to prolong the war by supporting both. Some studios don't see electronic distribution as a competitor to packaged media outside of the rental market.

Yes M$ likes to throw it's money around just to undermine Sony

Yes I think HD-DVD fanboys will be taking this as a victory even though they are two completely different animals. I think maybe 30% at the most are 360 owners as well.

Still make's no sense as the majority of 360's still only have 12Gb of space on their HDD (assuming they have no saves or other downloadable content stored on it already) - is that enough to showcase a feature film in HD?

Snake, they generally run at around 4 gig and are low bitrate 720p VCI encodes. And since the movies have a set viewing period, I guess the assumption is they will be deleted upon viewing, thus freeing the space back up. They don't look bad, but they obviously can't come close to matching the quality of Blu or HD. During a break in the conference I popped onto XBL to see what was available, and while I saw all the live action movies, I did not see any animated titles available aside from one of their cheapie direct-to-DVD sequels that John Lasseter mercifully killed production of recently.

It was shitty to see the Disney news, but it means nothing to hd-dvd since they wont get crap out of it. It does hurt the blu-ray cause, but just barely. Not happy with that announcement at all. But what a joke that MS conference was overall tho. SCENE IT! Mario, errr, Viva Party! And FPS #3499. What a joke. I also loved the 4th SKU console system, no price drop, and NO MGS4. Just blah blah blah BS. Worst E3 conference ive ever witnessed.

Default Disney XBox downloads

I was wondering what everybody here thought about the whole disney being on xbox live marketplace thing for movie downloads. I for one would never waist my money on a 24 hour download, but it brings up a few questions. Do you think this is going to hurt hd dvd or blu-ray, maybe both?

I could see it hurting hd dvd because now people will see no reason to dish out money for an hd dvd player that cant even play movies that they can download.

Thoughts, comments are welcome.

yup...microsoft's real intention try to stop adoption of the HD physical media
Microsofts want to get rid of the physical disc's. anyway it will have in MY opinion yea this will kill of HD DVD. "I JUST CAN SEE IT NOW" WHY SPEND $200.00 FOR A HD DVD add on when i can just download.

I'm not a big gamer so this is the first I'm hearing about it.

But in general, the whole "download" thing is really way off. Even the FIOS beta is a great idea but a real bust for now. Really...it took my son 8 HOURS to download "Bridge to Terabithia" for his iPod. And I have the fastest service from AT&T plus a ton of "server iron" 'cuz I'm in the computer industry.

To download anything close to 25-50 GB's like BD or HD-DVD is 10 years out or longer. It's going to take a long time for the telcos to get fiber to the MPOE (Main Point of Entry) for each home in America. I applaud Microsoft's and Verizon's vision...it has to start somewhere...but physical media is a reality for the next 15 years. The DirecTV bird that just went up on July 7 to service their big push into HD has a longevity of about 15 years. Even it is not capable of handling on-demand data streams at the capacity we're talking about here for every home in America.

I'm certainly not putting on-hold any plans to buy BD disks.

Comments & disagreements welcomed.

I agree, I've downloaded one movie on my computer and I thought it took way too long. That and the fact that I still like to have a physical copy of something are the two things really holding me back from wanting to go all out downloading.

I cannot stand movie downloads, i think it takes way too long to d/l, the quality at best is 720p, and the cost is not relative to what you get. I'm sure this will be the wave of the future, but for now I am sticking to the physical medium.

And your only allowed to play it on the device that is at the whim of MS..once you go that route for your movies you've lost control over your content. They can change the rules at anytime for their benefit. Or what happens when your 360 dies? How do you get all those movies back again onto another device?

Are you going to carry your 360 around if you want to watch something? With optical media I can go to another location, load up the disc and watch it. Much more durable than HDD as well.
