i have an rx v765, and it was a breeze to set up. i'd just make sure you're getting the remote as well as the set-up mike...

any idea why the 765 is more than the 863?

I see on the specs that this receiver does not have HDMI Pass Through. Does anyone know if you need HDMI Pass Through in order to play the PCM signal that a PS3 sends to the receiver??

This reciever will have no problems playing a PCM signal sent from a PS3.

I figured it would accept it. Can anyone explain to me exactly what "Pass Through" means?

in my limited expertise, i think "pass through" refers to the receiver accepting the signal from the hdmi source and passing it to the video display un-altered, therefore preserving the best video quality w/ applying up-conversion. also, "pass through" could mean that the receiver can only process video through hdmi, not audio. no worries w/ the rx v863; you get full audio and video through hdmi.

also, the rx v765 is comparable to last year's rx v663; the rx v863 would be comparable to the rx v 1065 or rx v2065. the rx v765 is a newer model so that would explain the price differential.

The RX-V863 is a fantastic receiver, and the amplifier / power supply section is a bit beefier than the RX-V765. It's cheaper than the 765, which came out in May (I think) because it's the previous year's model. Even so, if you look at the specs between the two models, the 765 isn't a true replacement for the 863.

I have the HTR-6080, which was also the same as the RX-V861. It was the model the RX-V861 replaced. The only significant change was the addition of decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA, and a bump up in upscaling from 1080i to 1080p from all sources.

If you can get a deal on the 863, I'd recommend getting it. The MSRP on it was $999 when released, and it really excels with both music and surround soundtracks. Here's some reviews of it:

http://www.hometheatermag.com/receivers/708yamrec/

http://hometheaterreview.com/yamaha-...iver-reviewed/

http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/r...yamaha-rx-v863

If you can get a good deal on it, I say go for it!

Pass-through will "passthrough" the video/audio through the AVR and will not touch the info sent. Therefore, you would have to run a seperate optical cable to the AVR for Audio.

Higher level AVR's usually can read or decode the video/audio. For video it might be able to upscale for example. For audio it can read the audio and play it (either as a LPCM signal or decoding when you bitstream from the player).

However, “passthrough” is a misleading term, as it has different definitions with different avr manufacturers.

Do not let it get away for that price! I've had my HTR-6080 (861) for almost a year now, and it has been fantastic. I think you will be very pleased with it - especially for $370!

None at all, just like any other AVR.

Read the manual, there is a lot of good info in there. It will explain the Zone B/Presence thing pretty well.

I set mine up, ran the calibration w/ the mic, then made a few tweaks to my liking.

I didn't have any difficulty with setup at all either. Granted, it is a complex receiver with a lot of features, but it sets up fairly easily - especially with YPAO.
