Sounds like a grounding issue. Have you made any changes/additions to your setup recently?

Don't worry about it too much. Some amplifiers do that. When you turn them on or off, they make a popping sound. The built-in amps in my Def Tech super tower speakers make that sound. When I turn them off, they make a popping sound in their buil-in subwoofers.

My two-channel Carver TFM-45 amplifier does the same. The popping sound is louder when I turn it off than when I turn it on.

I have owned the Def Tech super tower speakers since 1996 and the Carver amp was purchased in 1991. My speakers haven't been damaged yet.

All my amps (with the exception of Cinepro amp) are connected to power conditioners. They may the popping sound with them or without them.

If the problem was always there, I wouldn't worry about it. However, if it is a new problem, then it could be due to ground hum or other noises in your system. Try by separating the wires from each other. Use shielded RG6 cable for your subwoofer. Double check all wires and cables and make sure there are no shorts in the system. If it only happens when you turn the system down, it probably won't do any damage.

Read the Ground Hum & Ground Hum Isolators thread. You may find something useful there.

Perhaps if the auto-on was used (not sure if this sub has one) this would eliminate the pop. It sounds like you are actually turning off the sub every time. Have you tried this as a possible "work around?" If so, then I agree with BD, sounds like you need new cables or you may need a ground loop isolator.
