Default grainey stuff on whites

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong in my settings.

I watched Home Alone last night and some scenes with whites in the distance like snow or clouds are "buzzing" with a grain like look and I noticed this in Rambo also, the whole movie was pristine except when they are on the river the white clouds in the distant sky are "buzzing"

I am assuming this isn't grain as it is color specific, but something else?

I have had this myself on some movies. The close up was crystal clear but far away was grainy. I think some movies are made like this, however I could be wrong. I have watched other movies and everything is crystal clear. The settings on the tv were the same for both. Sorry for not really having an answer for you. When I first got my tv the first movie I watched was like this. I was not very happy. Try some other movies and see what happens.

What I forgot to mention was all of the colors on my set were doing this. Anything in background on certain movies was like this. Not just my white.

I would reduce your sharpness first, and then look into calibrating your set.

I think when it is across all colors it is film grain. Mine seems to be white specific, or maybe that it is just more noticeable against whites

Thanks, I was figuring I needed to play with contrast or sharpness. I've calibrated using suggestions form the AVSfourm site, and the picture looks great a la Rambo etc except for this grainy white thing that is bugging me

I would say what you are probably seeing is instances of film grain, which can be exaggerated by the sharpness dial greatly.

Also turn off all the enhancement and reduction setting for the TV. Just adds noise is all that stuff does. Even the Noise Reduction adds content to the picture, turn that stuff all off.

Thanks for the reply, I'll try the sharpness as was suggested and I know my noise reduction settings are set at low, so i will turn them off and see how that does.
