Default Intercooler for PS3?

I just got PS3 two days ago and saw Intercooler for it, its it a must have? My PS3 i very ventilated, but sometimes when I got to check the PS3. I can feel the hot air coming from the back. Is it a good investment to save money in the long run? if so, which brand would you recommend? thanks

Here are a few other threads discussing intercoolers...

IMO, you shouldn't get an intercooler. I don't have one, and never will.

Take a look at this thread, then decide if you think the PS3's cooling system is in need of help from an intercooler.

Think of it this way. it's better that hot air is coming out of your system then just staying in there to heat it up. It was designed to do that. I've had my ps3 on for over 12hours+ non stop playing resistance with a buddy of mine. and had no problems. So enjoy your ps3 and let it breath.

Cheers

Given how many 360s the Intercooler bricked(by itself, no help from the design flaws by constantly causing voltage spikes and arcing to the point of scorch marks on the system), and almost caused fires I'd stay far far away from their products

This by far the best post to deter noobs from getting those turd accesories.

And if it don't break miserably as described above, then is mearly making nosie and increasing your electric bill. But nothing to cool your system.

Cool Don't do it unless.........

If you are putting your PS3 in an awkward spot that is not well ventilated then you MIGHT consider it. I personally bought a stand for mine so that I could set it on my carpeted floor safely. This allowed me to move it away from my other electronics a bit and IMO keeps the heat isolated to just the PS3 (it can cool itself but the other electronics throw heat too). As long as you have it in a safe normally heated/cooled room and it's not stacked on top of your receiver you should be fine.

Oh, and you think the PS3 has a loud fan? (I really don't) Just wait until you fire up an intercooler.

The PS3 should never overheat to the point of damage, it has a safety system that will shut it down before that happens. Just don't put it in with a 360, they will fight to the death.

But if you have ever seen the thread about the guy who sealed all of his air holes with tape then you know that it doesn't ALWAYS work. Sony did step up and give him a new one but still............

Yeah, that was a great one. With tape over the vents, the hot air is trapped inside even after the system shuts down. If the vents are open, the air can escape and hopefully prevent damage. Of course there can always be a manufacturing error or malfunction, but overall the PS3 seems to be very reliable.

Cool I agree, not casting aspersions on the PS3

I didn't mean to seem like I was badmouthing the PS3, I most definitely was not. No one's perfect, just ask M$ about the 360. Well, actually, don't, apparently there was no problem until there was a problem but it's solved so don't ask them about it anymore.
