USA The Indian Tomb (1921) - April 5th, 2022

Kino will be releasing Joe May's classic 2-part silent German epic The Indian Tomb (1921) on Blu-ray on April 5th. The Blu-ray will include a new 45 min. visual essay.

Quote:
Before creating such silent masterworks as Metropolis, Spies, Die Nibelungen, and Woman in the Moon, Fritz Lang and screenwriter Thea von Harbou crafted the screenplay for this four-hour exotic epic for director Joe May (Asphalt). Conrad Veidt (The Hands of Orlac) stars as the vengeance-crazed Maharajah of Bengal, who seeks to build an imposing temple in which to entomb his former wife. But his diabolical plans are thwarted upon the arrival of two adventurers: a British architect (Olaf Fönss) and his fiancée Irene (Mia May). A masterpiece of Orientalist fantasy, The Indian Tomb’s labyrinthine plot is punctuated by thrilling action sequences and ambitious special effects. Late in his career, Lang would return to the story and remake the diptych as The Tiger of Eschnapur and The Indian Tomb (1959).

Blu-ray Extras Include:
“Turbans over Woltersdorf,” a visual essay written by David Cairns and Fiona Watson (2022, 45 Min.)

Very cool. Will have to pick this up.

Now it would be extra awesome if Kino upgraded Joe May's Asphalt (1929) to Blu-ray too I'm my opinion, his best work.

Asphalt is tucked away on this set, but is not subtitled in English. https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/50-Ja...lu-ray/186616/

At least that means the work has been done for an HD version, so hopefully we’ll see it sooner or later.

Part of Target's B2G1 deal, but probably won't last long:

Has there been any review's of Kino's release of Joe May's The Indian Tomb? I can't find any.

I have debating between getting this an Eureka's version, however assuming I can get Kino's version for $10 on one of their sales, that would make Eureka's version more than 2x the cost. Beside a booklet, to me the only thing could justify the additional cost would be noticeably different PQ.

All I know is the Eureka has spread the 2 movies on 2 separate discs, and Kino has put the 4+ hour of both movies on one disc. Logic would tell me that, based on that alone, the Eureka could be better PQ, but that is not always the case.

Does anybody have the Kino version and can comment on the PQ?

There is one on HTF, but out of respect for this site, I won't post a direct link

Thank you. Read that . I finally did find another one (it wasn't HTF) and the comments on PQ sounded pretty good, too. I can't justify another $11 just for a Eureka 24 page booklet, so will order the Kino version once it goes down to $9.97 on one of their sales.

Surprised there weren't more reviews or comments to this thread. I haven't seen the film, but it seems an important one for Silent film fans.

Gunsnroses, you said you wouldn't link to another site that reviewed the film out of respect for this site. I am not sure why that is inappropriate. This site currently has no review of this film. Why is it disrespectful to link to another site that does? I have posted links to DVD Beaver, for instance, to talk about reviews of movies that are discussed in this forum. Is that inappropriate?

I love this site and certainly don't want to disrespect it nor violate any forum rules. Can you help me understand this?

Just a personal thing. I don't know if there are any rules or anything forbidding it. I guess it's kind of like how if I am in one store, I wouldn't say aloud, "hey, I'm going to go to one of their competitors to get the item I want instead." But people may not mind saying that too. To each his own

And as to why there aren't more reviews? It's not really a major release or a largely popular film anymore, even if it once was upon release, nor is it particularly acclaimed nowadays compared to other German silents, especially those by the writers of this title.

Not sure how it works, but the title may be in the public domain, or have a very long license from the WFMS, because I never see any titles licensed by them in the WSL sale.

It’s also been broadcast in HD on Arte before.

For the score, I did like some pieces, on their own, but, at times, it felt very out-of-place. Some parts sound like they belong in sort of a gothic-horror instead of a sprawling adventure-fantasy film.
