I just watched "The Departed" for the first time in a long, long time. I watched it very closely, because I was interested in editing techniques that were used. And, while watching it, I caught onto some things I didn't catch before, and now I'm scratching my head.
Warning: Spoilers throughout this post. If you don't want anything, well, spoiled, then don't read ![]() OK, the first thing is during the microchip deal that goes down with the Chinese. The cops are naming off Frank Costello's (Jack Nicholsan) associates that are with him, as they get out of the cars. They name William Costigan Jr., Leo's character. One of the cops who hear the name, who is there to monitor the exchange, is Brown, Anthony Anderson's character. Brown and William went through the academy together and seemed to know one another quite well. So why didn't Brown say anything? Maybe it's just a fluke in the movie, one of those mistakes. But I'm wondering if anyone has anything to say about that. The second thing is: Madolyn, the shrink, is pregnant, but it doesn't make it clear who the father is: William or Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon). I think it's William's, but I also think the question is left unanswered on purpose. What do you think? Final thing: What do you think William gives Madolyn in the manila envelope? This is toward the end of the movie when William realizes Sullivan is the mole. He meets Madolyn in front of her apartment and tells her to only open it if something happens to him. I'm thinking it's a way to contact Staff Sgt. Dignam (Mark Wahlberg), along with more information about Sullivan, and possibly other tidbits of info. So, just wanting to get some discussion going on this movie. Maybe there are concrete answers to these things, maybe there aren't. Either way, thanks for your time and any participation! |
