G'day all,
I've searched and can't find much. Basically i've just bought myself a 50inch full hd plasma (samsung) and a samsung blu ray player. These were bought to replace my previous blu ray player and 42 inch plasma. Only thing i've got left to replace are my speakers and receiver. These were bought a couple years ago as a Yamaha Home Theatre package (5.1 w/ receiver). I cannot afford to purchase speakers at the moment and would like to experience lossless audio so was wondering if it's a wise move to first purchase the receiver (onkyo 606) and keep the speakers as they are until i get some more money. Thanks |

This is the Package except i got 4 standing speakers instead.
http://www.yamahamusic.com.au/produc...210-series.asp I do understand they are an extremely cheap set of speakers and it was just an entrance to the home theatre world but i ensure you they will be replaced within the next 8-12 months. PS: The Yamaha sub in the package plugs into the back of the supplied Yamaha Receiver. Will this be able to plug into the back of an Onkyo 606? If it doesn't with the original plug, can i cut the plug off and attach a Banana plug onto it to go into the Onkyo 606? Last edited by summo; 12-04-2009 at 05:02 AM. |

What receiver do you currently have? Also, what model of blu ray player?
If you have Analog in's on the receiver, and your blu ray player decodes the new codecs and has analog outs, you could get the HD audio right now. Those speakers don't look all that bad. They aren't white van cheap or anything so you may be able to tell the difference in the lossless formats. The better sounding the speaker, the more difference you will hear. That being said, the difference in lossless formats over their lossy bretheren is subtle in my opinion. A little more detail, a little more life-like. |

This is the current receiver:
http://www.yamahamusic.com.au/produc...s/RX-V361B.asp This is the current Blu-ray Player: http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/t...l&tab=features I have $1500 max to spend, whether it be on speakers, receiver or whatever. I just want lossless audio so i can get a nicer sound to go with my new picture clarity. |

Unfortunately your setup can not be configured to give you HD audio. It was a long shot anyway, few BD players decode HD codecs and have analog outs.
So, you will need to buy the receiver to get HD audio. Seems as good a plan as any. Get the receiver now and start auditioning speakers so you know how much you need to save to get what you want. Get your front stage done first (mains and center) then move your current mains to surround duty giving you 7.1. Then replace the sub, and lastly the surrounds. |

Legend mate, pretty much what i wanted to hear anyway.
Now i just got home from the shop and took down notes of the 2 Receivers i wish to purchase (i know i stated Onkyo 606, but saw this new one): *Onkyo 606 *Pioneer VSX-1019 Anyone have any experiences with the Pioneer? PS: I'm currently using an optical cable, people say that coaxal is alot better.. this true? Last edited by summo; 12-04-2009 at 07:20 AM. |

You would be needing HDMI or multichannel analog connection to be able to use the HD codecs. It also depends on the player if it decodes it internally you could use both connections if the player does not then you would need to bitstream through HDMI. BigDaddy would have a sticky about this somewhere i think il be back with the link once i find it.

Thanks mate,
Just to get things straight, does a HDMI cable for Audio look exactly like a HDMI cable you would use for Video? I take it the Audio HDMI would go from you Blu-Ray player to your Receiver? |

That would depend.. I would assume that most equipment nowadays accept audio and video through HDMI. I have a PS3 connected by a HDMI cable to the Marantz reciever then the HDMI out of the reciever to the HDMI input of the TV or display. So it would basically be one HDMI cable taking the audio and video signals through.

The HDMI cable is the same, and you can connect it from your BD player to the receiver for both audio and video, then another HDMI cable to your TV for video. But check that any new receiver can handle the 6 ohm speakers you already have.
