Default In the future maybe some companies might charge a annual fee for firmware updates

*** It should be noted that every company currently offers free firmware updates for BLU-RAY players and a subscription based firmware update business model might never happen since no company currently is even considering it at this time ***

Perhaps in the future some consumer electronics companies might start charging an annual fee to receive firmware updates on BLU-RAY players. For example currently one can purchase a DVD player that will upconvert standard 480i DVD's to 1080P over HDMI for only $29 at Walmart and other retail stores. When and if BLU-RAY players fall under $50 during the Christmas season of 2010 the players would be sold at very small profit margins. The BLU-RAY format requires consumer electronic manufactories to constantly employee a team of computer programmers so that the latest firmware update can be written to play the latest movies that uses renewable BD+ encryption keys.

Why would a company make a BLU-RAY player that costs $40 or $45 to manufactory and then have retail stores sell the player for around $49.99? The company would lose money if they provided free firmware updates for 10 years for a low cost BLU-RAY player. I am all for cheap BD-LIVE (profile 2.0) BLU-RAY players for $30 or $50 in 2010 or 2011 but in the future maybe companies might start charging an annual subscription fee for those consumers that want to receive the latest firmware update.
