Rank these things, start with your most important...
The Film Itself Special Features PQ SQ Packaging Price That's the order I'd put mine in, just want to see what others put as it seems some people on this forum don't give a damn about the film, just wether it comes with a slip or steelbook. ![]() |

I think PQ and SQ speak for themselves. Even if the blu ray is rubbish, it will still be better than the dvd version... (or at least with audio on par)
I would never buy something I knew I didn't like though no matter if it came as a steelbook or with a slipcover or anything. Sometimes I blind buy films, but I can always sell them if they are rubbish. Last one I did this with was Despicable Me, and it turned out to be a great film! |

The film for me is the most important. I will never understand people that buy every Hollywood blockbuster based on just PQ and/or AQ alone, but that's me.
After that, for regular films, it's the PQ. For concerts and such, it's obviously the AQ I don't care much for Special Features, so that never enters any equation. |

The film
PQ Special Features Packaging Price SQ Of course the film is the most important part, but there's some I just won't buy because of the poor quality. While the film is the crucial element, if the picture quality, sound, features and even packaging are not up to scratch then I just won't bother (what's the point when the DVD counterpart is just as good, and with probably better packaging, for a lot cheaper?), so while the film is the primary, it doesn't hold the weight of the purchase on it's own for me, that's for sure. Call me greedy, but every single element I've mentioned has to really be included for me to actually pursue that particular Blu-ray, otherwise I'll just wait for an incredibly low price. I've blind bought many Blu-rays in my collection to be honest, but I guess it's all how you perceive blind buying. Personally I don't think I've particularly blind bought Blu-rays, but it's just how you look at it. I'll do a search on this site, seeing if the particular Blu-ray has amazing PQ, features, SQ and packaging of course, as well as great reviews regarding the film itself, and if it ticks all those boxes then the chances are I'll probably just buy the Blu-ray should the price be right even if I've not viewed the film in advance. So, it's not really blind buying, but more so a researched surprise. Nice thread too btw. Last edited by THunter; 04-01-2011 at 07:57 PM. |

The inclusion of a slipcase of course!
I kid, I kid. I'm quite surprised by the response thus far, given that every second post on these forums seems to be concerned with slipcases. For me the film is key. PQ comes next, followed by Price, Special Features and AQ. AQ only registers so low for me because we don't have a proper audio set up yet. I'm sure if we did then it would be up there with PQ. I don't even consider packaging when it comes to buying a film. |

Price is first unless it's a new release I really want with a packaging that might not last long. Otherwise I'll try and ignore the film until it's in my 'cheap bastard' price range. Then it's do I already have the title on DVD? Then it's AV if the transfer is better in a different region I'll probably avoid it.
So it's: Price/Packaging/Title. AV Quality. Special Features are important I'd rather have them then not have them but Blu-ray doesn't have 1 and 2 disc versions like DVD (which is a plus) I'll usually go for a Triple Play over a Double etc. |

The Film Itself + Picture Quality (go hand in hand, if one of these 2 is poor I avoid)
Price Special Features Packaging Audio Quality Audio isn't as big a concern at the moment, as I lack a decent surround sound system. I will admit I can be swayed by a nice slipcover or steelbook, but has to be a film I actually want to watch and be a decent price. I refuse to pay 2 or 3 times the price for a metal box or card sleeve. Last edited by DaveSimonH; 04-01-2011 at 02:49 PM. |
