I've got this receiver, and it's very good, but it does not accept audio through HDMI (I wanted to wait for HDMI 1.3, so this is just a stop-gap for me). It provides great sound, very clear (I'm running klipsch synergy speakers off of this).

What all would you like to know about it?

As I said, if you want uncompressed audio from a PS3, this won't do it. It also doesn't upscale signals to the HDMI out. The HDMI features on this are just for video passthrough.

I've got the sony str-dg1000 which seems to do fairly well. Its got hdmi switching and accepts 1080p through hdmi. It also does the linear pcm through the hdmi as well. Heres a question of my own for anyone with an answer. It also has dts 96/24...does anyone know if there is any movies or anything that uses this?

I'd tell him to consider the TX-SR605, since I think that is more in the same price range.

All I would recommend would be a system that uses HDMI... 2 HDMI input, and 1 HDMI output.
And make sure it does signal up-sampling (i think that's what it is).
So if the signal it receives is not HDMI, it will up-sample it for the HDMI and HDTV screen.

The 605 is 90 watts per channel, but it has HDMI v1.3 inputs, and can decode DTSHD-MA. The 805 is THX-certified (for what that's worth to you), is 130 watts per channel. It has the most features of all of them, incl. what I said for the 605 and 3 HDMI inputs.

The only place the Pioneer wins out is the the power vs. the 605, also, I think you can find that Pioneer for under $450. If the pioneer had the price range you're looking at, then I would probably say to go with the 605.

I'd wait for the new Denon receivers:

http://www.guidetohometheater.com/news/707den/

They all support HDMI 1.3. Also, Pioneer has some new models coming out in August that support HDMI 1.3, and Onkyo too. Take some of you favourite recordings (audio and movies) and go for a listen. Finally, we can shop for some good gear to go with our Blu-ray players!

Thumbs up

I've got the 805 and it is spectacular. Everything hooked up to it and 1 cable to the TV. Amazing sound and picture, well recommended.

If you have a 7.1 setup, you want the 805. With the 805, you can matrix 7.1 audio out of a 5.1 sound track (lossless). You cannot do this with the 605.

as a complete AV receiver newbie (i've previously only really cared about my TV and media player), i have a question.

if i were to input all of my video sources into the receiver, i still only need the one HDMI video out cable to the TV right?

edit: video sources means - digital cable, PS3, xbox, etc etc...

Onkyo is a great brand, and I don't really think THX is too important. Do a search on this site about that, because I remember there being a thread about the weight it has today. With the onkyo you get the uncompressed audio. I haven't heard uncompressed audio, but people on here sing its praises.

This is true if you get a receiver like the onkyos we've discussed. The pioneer does not do that. For the onkyos, everything gets upconverted to HDMI (I believe) and you only have the one cable going to the TV. Other receivers will do this as well, so if you find one that looks good, share the link and we can tell you more if you're unsure of what it can do.

You're correct, you can't do it. It's just called "HDMI Passthrough." It's very minimalist, I got the receiver because I knew I would be upgrading once a v1.3 receiver came out.

If you want Pioneer, the new HDMI 1.3 Elites are the only way to go for now, though in the next year or so I'm sure that will make it's way to the standard Pioneer models. Onkyo has a great rep, and the 605 seems to be a great value.
