Exclamation Problem with bdp-s300

Hi all:

I have a BDP-S300 Blue ray player. After less than 2 years it is not recognizing any DVD disks anymore. Very bad as the warranty has expired. I thought that it was a problem with the lens dusty, but I learned that the disk is not spinning. I have enough equipment to troubleshoot it (full electronic lab), and decided to check it. No schematics, no parts, of course, and the drive it self a BDP-100 seems to be the only problem. Some components, apparently the drivers for the motor are excessively hot (abnormal for a chip) and there's no way of getting those chips as they seem to be very Sony-specific (haven't really search for them).

The question that I have before I buy a new one (250 CDN) or attempt to send this one for repair, has any one faced a similar problem like this ?

Thanks in advance

J

I will offer you this advice. I have lived with a Sony BDP-S300 and its older brother BDP-S1 (price for both units was about $1300) and endured their inconsistencies ("slow as molasses" load times, freezing at random scenes in a movie and having to reload, etc.) for almost three years. One of the wisest decisions I have made was to buy a Panasonic DMP-BD605 at Costco and relegate the Sony's to our bedroom closet. The stress relief alone was worth many times the additional $170 spent. Don't think about it - just do it; it's only going to get worse.

I just spoke with a service rep here and he acknowledged that the problem is very common, and the repair cost is over 300 CDN. Guess what ? the unit brand new is 250 CDN.
I also phoned Sony Canada and exposed my problem and the expected answer was "we can not do anything if the warranty is already expired". Yes I knew it, all I wanted is to let them know that another possible buyer will move to another manufacturer. On top of the damn slow disk loading, and now that I have this problem. I really want to put Sony not on the top of the list anymore. Sony should take care of their own design flaws helping customers in a better way.

Thanks to you all. I for sure will buy Panasonic.

Regards

J
