Based on the best-selling memoir by Betty MacDonald, the film stars MacMurray as a man who buys an abandoned chicken farm and Colbert as the wife who tries to support him—with both discovering that life on the farm is not quite as idyllic as they initially dreamed. But it was Marjorie Main and Percy Kilbride who stole the show as Ma and Pa Kettle. They and their children proved so popular with audiences that they went on to make 9 additional Kettle films (Main would also receive the film’s only Academy Award® nomination as Best Supporting Actress)
