Default Netflix ps3 setup??

Just wondering if anyone has tried the netflix option on the ps3 as i am thinking of buying it? Sounds like a killer deal for only 9 bucks a month and having unlim streaming and 1 out at a time on blu.

I know it's not a true hd picture but is it atleast somewhat close? Would be a nice option having over 10,000 movies at my hands, comcast on-demand just does not cut it anymore.

Oh you have to pay to get Netflix on your PS3? Someone show me how this works too!

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not JJ. Anyway you have to subscribe to Netflix to be able to use their streaming option. I got the disc for my PS3 and I loaded it and registered it, but I've never used it other than that. I generally use my Xbox 360 for streaming since I don't have to get up and put a disc in. The PQ for the 360 is quite good and I see no reason why it wouldn't be on the PS3 as well.

I mean, I have an NF subscription already - I assumed since the PS3 was already a browser, I could just log onto Netflix, and stream as it is. I didn't know any extra steps were necessary.

I have it and it looks awesome. Some of the HD streams, like Lost and a few others that are newer are amazing. Not BD quality but better than DVD. No surround sound streaming though.

You can't stream Netflix directly from the PSN browser, or any browser, because it uses it's own propietary format that requires software installation that can't be done on the PS3 itself. You have to get a disc from Netflix (free) that has the Netflix streaming application on it. The app can't be installed to PS3's XMB until MS's exclusivity contract with Netflix is up. After that the discless Netflix is expected to be available to rumored upcoming Premium PSN subscribers only, but free PSN users will still be able to stream from the Netflix app disc.

I gotcha. As robinandtami pointed out there's no extra charge. Just go into your Netflix account and add the PS3 streaming disc to your queue. It's marked not to send it back and it doesn't count toward your disc limit. You just put it in your PS3 and register it.

I will be using this starting next week... is there a way to tell which are HD broadcasts before I view? Also how does the quality compare vs an unconverted DVD and a HD TV channel movie broadcast?

HD in this case primarily means it's widescreen; otherwise, wouldn't raise hopes.
Still looks good, but the "default" for most of the streaming movies is 4:3.

Nice thanks for all the info everyone, think it looks like I'm going to give this a try. The person on the phone that i talked to said that a disc free app is on the way which will be nice and save the wear and tear on the PS3.

Also nice that it is a no contract deal, if i don't feel I'm using it to it's fullest i can cancel anytime.

Yes. You have to go into your Netflix account and add shows/movies to your instant queue, and it'll tell you in the information about that show/movie if it's HD. I've only really ever used the streaming feature to watch the series Lost and IMO the HD presentation is quite good. I've had it drop out of HD on a couple of occasions and there is a very noticable difference in video quality.

Just had the disc sent to me. Thanks for this. So...where does one see the HD mark again? I can't find it anywhere to see what is HD and what isn't.

When you look at the movies via the PS3 (not the PC) there is a little "HD" logo down by the run-time of the film..... for me, it doesn't matter much since my quality is "So-So" since I don't have very fast internet....... but I absolutely LOVE the streaming option from Netflix...... It's great for late night laughs from Richard Pryor, that's for sure!

I've used it to watch movies that are talked a lot about, but I know I won't like (but feel the need to watch them anyways) a few nights ago I watched "Paul Blart, Mall Cop" for this very reason....... It had zero laughs, zero enjoyment, and didn't cost me 2 days in to-and-from shipping time where I could otherwise be getting films like "The Hangover" and "Inglorious Basterds" (that I actually want to see)

Netflix streaming kicks-ass (if I didn't make it clear enough before )

EDIT:

important to note..... when you see the "List" of movies on the PS3, it'll be "New arrivals movies, new arrivals T.V., drama, comedy, horror, suspense, etc etc etc"

And they will all be limited to 100 selections each...... the best way to find movies is to add them to your instant queue via your computer, and then they will show up on the "You Instant Queue" tab on the PS3.......

Doing it on the PC you can also filter by HD streams

And if you are into B horror films. Oh who am I kidding, we're talking C,D, and E films here.

I watched a zombie film the other day that looked like it was filmed by a college film class. It had some genuinely good parts, and a mini-gun scene at the end. Gotta love zombie puree.

I've had the streaming disc for about a month now and absolutely love it. I never watched any of 'The Office' or 'Lost' so have been streaming those in HD and have been having a blast having marathons. I think I finished all 5 seasons of The Office in about a weeks time!

Just signed up to Netflix myself last week, and have already used my PS3 to stream movies. I was impressed with the feature and hope to stream more in the future (Seven Samurai is available, so I just need to find a 3 1/2 hour block to watch it!)
