Default Prerich HT Build

Hello folks, as you all know, I have been using Klipsch Heritage speakers for a minute. While these speakers are very dynamic and sound great - after prolonged use - I found something missing. I decided to put my Snells back into action but this time to conduct a speaker shoot out - one on one - Snell vs Klipsch Heritage. There are things about the Klipsch that I just like - size, sensitivity, and dynamics (although the Snells are no slouch in the dynamics department either). The Snells are much more detailed than the Klipsch - image better and go lower ( the yamaha 663 setup even noticed that - set my Klipsch as small and my Snells as large). When placed at the same volume (not the same place on the dial, but the same level db wise) - the Snells out performed the Klipsch. They did it so well that I decided to wait and save for the Audio Note upgrade that I really want (not the copper one but the silvers). I have now placed the Klipsch in the spare room (they'll come back out if anything goes wrong with the Snells). What I also realized - is that the synergy between my Snells and Def Techs was better than that of my Klipsch and Def Techs. Popped the grills off of my BP-2's and noticed that they have the same tweeter as the rear tweeter on my Snell E-II's, (maybe thats why they are more synergetic ) Vifa was the major supplier of drivers to both Def Tech and Snell (with the exception of the Snell front tweeter - which is made by Tongen Foster - who supplied the same tweeter to Linn and Rogers). I'm going to repost pictures of my setup with the Snells in it. I'm also experimenting with rope lights. I will post my progress.

Some of you may be worried about spacing between my speakers - don't be, my Snells Left and Right are 9 feet apart, just like my Heresys were

I'm also considering not using the LFE channel persay - I 'm thinking about using one sub on each channel (crossing over at 50hz on my Paradigm-x30 using the high pass filter). I have experienced panning bass and I love it (my side surrounds have subs connected to them via high pass - Yamaha 663 detected those surrounds as large also ) I'll just send the LFE to the mains. I will let you know how this experiment turns out too

P.S. No - I will not be getting rid of my Heresys I love the way saxaphones sound out of these speakers! The Snells are just more detailed (and I hope they become even more detailed after the Sliver upgrades - but thats a way off - I need to save upwards to 3 grand for that).

I haven't seen any Klipsch Heritage owners out there, are there any Snell owners in the forum...at all - old Snell (Peter RIP), Mid Snell (Kevin now with Revel) or New Snell (D'Appolito)!

Had Heresy II Signature Edition's for years. Regretably I had to part with them, along with my McIntosh and Arcam gear.

I always loved the Heresy's....wish I still had them sometimes! But I don't..although the memories are fond!

Reposted my original Snell picture - I will be posting new ones Friday ! I can't believe how much real tight bottom end I have on my Snells - I really don't need a sub (I currently don't have my sub even turned up half way - its aobut a little under 1/4 th of the way up)! These speakers are just living!!!

Good speakers can make a world of difference to the sound performance. I generally only use my Epik Conquest with the whole Home Theater set-up. My rebuilt 2X and upgraded Dahlquist DQ-10s put out a bit of a wallop (can be very percussive with the right source) down to about 35? Hz by themselves which is normally how I play my 2 channel rig at this point.

No - that's actually limestone-very heavy and works well with my speakers (Snell speakers actually came with a small riser - that most Snell owners, Audio Note people, and even Snell itself says to get rid of and use some type of stand, or something very rigid - Limestone is very rigid )!

Default We're more alike than I thought . . .

Prerich - THX again for looking out for me! As for the Klipsch Heritage speakers, my first speakers (1975 I think) were Hereseys. I saved money from my paper route and working for my Dad in the summer until I had enough to buy the speakers, an APT-Holman preamp (Tomlinson Holman's design from KLH and THX) and a Harman Kardon CITATION 19 power amplifier. Unfortunately I didn't have enough to buy any sources so I saved for another 9 months to buy a Micro Seiki MB15 turntable with a Grado cartridge and a Sankyo cassette deck. Ahhh. . . finally music!

That was the beginning of my audio addiction. The Hereseys were traded up for La Scallas then stacked La Scallas! BIG SOUND! I too went a different way for a while, trying Stacked Large Advents then Magnapans MG Is, Mission 770s, Spica TC 50s, Thiel 1.2s, Stacked KEF C40s, Vandersteen IIcs, Acoustic Energy AE1s with Duntech subs, Wilson Audio WATT3/Puppy2 (possibly my favorite!) and finally a Kevin Voecks design, Revel Ultima Gems with (2) Ultima Sub 15s and the LE1 sub amp. Whew, it took a lot to remember all the different stages (speaker wise) my system(s) went through. I hope I didn't leave anything out!

I still have the Revels in my main room with the Klipsch dedicated to the Theater. And BTW, I also still use the La Scallas in my garage to play drums through. Outstanding stage monitors!

But anyway, the Kevin Voecks, Paul Klipsch and David Wilson connection is just too cool to not mention. Three degrees of seperation I guess. I read a fantastic interview with David Wilson describing his first speaker (K-Horn) and how he has always looked up to Paul Klipsch as a mentor. A huge complement I think!

THX, Doc

A huge compliment indeed ! Yes we are a lot alike (I had a chance to score some La Scalas in the military for 699 a pair - the Exchange had them marked wrong - didn't jump though - wish I had that old DPP - Delayed Purchase Plan will get you in trouble!!! ) I 've also owned several pair of Heresy's, VMPS, Polk SDA SRS, DMC Time Windows,Quad, Whafedale, JBL Studio monitors (4311b's if I'm not mistaken along with others) Bose (not ashamed to admit it), Infinity Kappas, AR 12's, AR Holography series, Yamaha NS-1000's, Def Tech's, Paradigms, and others The Snells are very....me. Fits my musical taste as well as being able to pump HT. I also like some of the Voecks designs (Still loyal to the Peter Snell designs though ) Alot of these designers actually sat and gleened from one another.

Default Classics for sure!

Prerich - Excellent! I've had several friends who owned some of the same. The NS1000s are a little known jewell that I sold in the late 70's. That was when I had the stacked Advents. My room mate (when I first moved to Atlanta) had Time Windows (the best speaker DCM ever made IMHO) and as you must know, they were made in the Drug Capitol of the Midwest! Great name - HaHa! A work mate had 2 pairs of ESL63's stacked with custom made rack/stand and yet another had the SDA1's, fantastic and really holographic!

We must have run in the same crowd at one time!

Talk at ya later . . .

THX, Doc

Default Go Blue!

Yeah me too! I'm from Ohio (don't hold that against me) but my Dad is from Port Huron! GO-BLUE! As a matter of fact, there was always a war in our house when ever OSU played Michigan. My Sister and I were always on my Dad's side cheering for Michigan against my Mom and their friends.

And there was no disrespect intended . . . the original owner / designer Steve Eberbach of DCM told us the background of the name during a sales meeting in the early 80's. It had something to do with the "Hash Bash" held the first Saturday in April every year in Ann Arbor at the University Diag. I think that's cool!
