PS3 Region Free?

I have looked this up a number of times. I have a few germany blus that are Region B/2 does PS3 not play these? I was able to get to the main menu of the blu but everytime I click play nothing happens and it just clicks like its going to play then goes back to the main menu

PS3 is Region-Free on all PS3 games except for the 1st Persona 4 Arena game. But for Blu-ray movies, it is locked to the region you bought your PS3 at.

Sounds like those titles are region free but 50hz, since you are able to get to the main menu but not play the movie (several discs do this, have the movie in one refresh rate and the menu in another). The American PS3 doesn't do 50 hz, unfortunately.

Is there a blu ray play recommended that can play any region any rate of blu?

All EU Blu-Ray players I have encountered can do 50 and 60hz (even the EU PS3), but the region issue is more difficult. You'd have to get either an Oppo and fit a chip in it, or any one of the cheaper alternatives that can be made region free through custom firmware. Look through the threads on Insignia players, they seem pretty cheap and sturdy, and can be bought within North America (at least I think they still can). I have a Toshiba BDX3100, which I installed the Australian region free firmware on, myself.

And there are of course online stores that sell region free players. You might consider that as well.

*Somewhat* related:

A couple of nights ago I tried watching Pineapple Express (blu) with my wife.

Popped the disc onto our 250GB slim PS3 and it froze three times in a row on the same screen - "clouds" forming as the loading screen.

Tried that disc on our PS4, it worked on the first try.

This is the first time EVER, for me, that my PS3 did not play a disc.

Any idea what happened?

The problem is also most displays don't do 50hz either, so you probably need a player that does conversion as well.
