Default Rockstar: 360's Tech. Differences Affecting GTA IV

As more companies find themselves working on high-profile releases designed for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 simultaneously, a tricky issue would be deciding where to draw the line technologically, as PS3 offers the guarantee of every player owning a hard drive and Blu-ray -- Xbox 360 can claim neither. This challenge appears to have cropped up as Rockstar Games has been developing Grand Theft Auto

If Xbox 360 owners have to download several gigs to complete the game, make them! But they'd better not cut down on the quality or quantity of assets in the PS3 version when the hardware allows both. If they do, they run the risk of being beaten out by rival GTA-style game developers that WILL try and max out the PS3.

Just imagine if the new Getaway game ended up outclassing GTA IV.

Yea, when it finally clicked in my brain a couple months ago that the 360 was still only using DVDs, it really got me disappointed that the PS3 version will probably only be using like 10GB of storage for what should be a MASSIVE game. Hopefully they will still be able to render a large enough area in HD, with enough visual content. Then I got to thinking that maybe this "exclusive 360 GTA IV" content is the stuff that is already on the Blu-ray for the PS3. I doubt it though. I would almost dare say that the lack of HD-DVD on the 360, will cause PS3 games to be not as good. (atleast the ones that are made for both consoles)

That would be a day to go down in the history books!

I have to agree with you here mate.. why should we suffer because Microsoft's "Next-Gen" console is miles behind the PS3's ability.

It will really put me off the game if it does end up being that way.

What seems stupid to me is that this is coming from a developer the size of Rockstar and a game as huge as GTA IV.

It's insulting, if the developers have a vision for their game, then pursue it, don't dumb it down because a certain console can't handle it. A game with this much prestige would sell millions of PS3's if it was still exclusive. They would still make their money plus they would have the game they intended to create. It seems like Rockstar is willing to take out features they themselves wanted to implement simply for more sales.

I can see a smaller company doing this, but Rockstar? GTA IV is huge! They shouldn't worry about sales, it will sell!

Yeah, this scares me a lot too, as mentioned already, developers holding back on things that COULD be just to have the same game available on both consoles.

I think what will happen is the 360 version will have a game data disc and and a gameplay disc, the PS3 version will have it all on one blu-ray.

This can't happen because the XBox360 Core has no hard drive to install that game data disc to. Developers cannot build a game unless it will run on all versions of the XBox360.

I also can't see them doing disc swapping on a sandbox style game like GTA. Anyone remember Riven from back in the day on 5 CDs? I seriously don't see that flying in a console environment. It's not nearly as big a deal when you're talking RPGs where movement is fairly linear... when you're talking about having to swap disks a few times just running around a city, the annoyance factor will skyrocket.

I read about the article posted. I think to make things as fair as possible, both the 360 and ps3 versions of GTA IV should be optimzed for the console and not have exactly the same game on both. What seperates the 360 from the ps3 is that the ps3 can hold more then the 360. The other option is that rockstar not make a 360 version of GTA and just focus on the ps3, but rockstar has always made both a playstation and xbox verison of GTA. I don't think that having only a ps3 version of GTA would be fair because you're requiring the player to get a $600.00 machine and you're leaving 360 owners in the dark, but if it's hard to develop for the ps3 and eaiser on the 360, then what? Hard choice to make? I say optimize each version of GTA for the hardware.

Gamespot finally posted the story too. Interesting that they don't have the balls to post such a story until every other gaming site has first.

Yer, muilti disk cant work on sandbox games so thry have to dumb down the game. Hopefully the next GTA rockstar will realise they can have ps3 as the lead platform and then give 360 a dumb downed port so everybody is happy

Bluray is truely an awesome media format and i dont like to bash dvd but...

Its true tho, developers are now limited on dvd so it stops games from having there full protential shown.

I mean GTA4 is going be a good game no doubt, but if it was only on bluray think of the better possiblitys that it could have, but untill the game comes out you cant really judge.

GTA IV to feature in-game internet? (and disk space issues)

Imagine that, lack of disk space making life hard for a developer!
