Default Bay Bridge to be shut down by broken cable

Not sure if this is thread worthy, but living in the bay area this is breaking news for us... I was just on this bridge a few days ago

Approx carries over 270,000 vehicles a day

Quote:
Commuters were crawling along Bay Area highways and packing into BART trains as they weather the season's second Bay Bridge closure, while the most optimistic estimates predict crews will need "days at the longest" to fix the break of a steel cable on the span's upper deck.

Pretty scary if you ask me... This looks to be a warning sign that this 73 yr old bridge is about togo

Thank god the new one will be done in 2011

Yeah, I cannot imagine this bridge being shut down. My wife and I drove over it in March when we visited SF. Awesome bridge nonetheless, hope they can save it. To me it is more impressive than the Golden Gate. Loved SF by the way, I am really hoping to move out there someday, maybe when I retire.

With the new bridge ready sometime in 2011 they have no choice but to shut it down... too many issues on this older one

Glad you enjoyed it in the Bay... It really is a great place to live

Is it shut down for good? No plan to reopen it until the other is done? The traffic will probably be nuts?

My buddy was on the bridge when that accident happened yesterday, needless to say he was pissed to be stuck there for a long time.

No, the bridge is not expected to be closed long, and could be open as early as tomorrow.

I'm glad that they're keeping a close eye on it, after that terrible bridge collapse in Minneapolis. The bay bridge would be much worse.

Are they widening the new bridge, anyone? I never paid attention.
