Default Check out this new toy from Sony!!!

Now if it were only about half its price I might even consider getting it. Click the link below:

It's still pretty sweet though...

This seems to be a lot of marketing fluff wrapped around what appears to be just a PC. What videophile cares about a media server loaded with Microsoft Works??

I can pull this off for 1/2 the price from D3LL and buy my own 500GB drive from Fry's for cheap!

Default Seems cool ..

I agree with Manco. A cool device but the PS3 can do everything the Sony VAIO Digital Living System with Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E6400 seems to do.
Besides, one of the selling features is a TV Tuner... Not even a HD tuner or Digital tuner... What would one do with a TV tuner after September 09? And will it only play back Mpeg 4's. One would still be converting video files with there home computer first. Oh well if they made someone will buy it, not me.

It's an HD Tuner (ATSC) and CableCard (QAM).

Quote:
TV tuner with PVR (personal video recorder) receives standard ATSC and NTSC signals; S-video and composite audio/video inputs; remote included

CableCARD slot allows optional access to analog, digital and premium cable and HDTV without the need for a set-top box (contact your local cable company for more information)
It's quite a bit more (and costs quite a bit more) than the PS3. For one thing it's a BD burner.
It has 2 HDDs in RAID 0 for 500GB of storage. With the proper codecs it plays back many more media formats than the PS3.

You can't buy a OEM CableCard tuner, these can be only purchased as part of a system. The separate tuners that you can buy only support OTA or unencrypted HD channels, no digital cable.

I wouldn't mind having one.

Default Good call

Good call, Peter thanks for the info. A BD burner is a great feature. I spoke to soon; there are tons of cool features on this Sony I didn't see. I would like to have one as well, but the price is a kicker. But like all new things the price will come down. And like all new things there is undoubtedly a better one on the way.

Way better? No.

The case alone is a few hundred dollars, not to mention the tuner/cablecard/BD burner.

Ever price those high end Media Center PC cases? They have to be cool, yet silent. Custom everything.

Default the suck

I've personally installed one of these machines in a customer's house and they blow. plenty of issues and you would be able to do a lot more with just building your own media server pc. all of these types of machines are worthless in my opinion. your just much better off building your own pc and getting media server software like Nero or something.

They're far from worthless, they just need to be refined a bit. As big a naysayer as you are regarding these type of machines, I bet you would buy one in a heartbeat if they were well made and cost less then a grand.
