Default Game Options Poll

Considering that one of the big selling points for BD games is that they can store more content and features. Would you like to see game developers make options available that would let you turn on/off things like:

1. Blood (or change blood colors)
2. Profanity

Mature games could be turned on/off into Teen games.
It wouldn't be that great of a selling point and would add more costs and time.

im not saying it wouldn't be nice for young kids, but its not worth the time and effort of the devs IMO. also, if devs did do this they would get labeled as trying to making a "gateway" to more mature games for younger kids.

I see the point your making but I dont agree that it would add significant time/cost to development. These games are big budget and not adding more small features like this is kind of like saying we just built a new house but we cant afford to put in dimming light switches because they cost too much and take too long to wire. (or some other analogy)

Also for the sake of discussion lets ignore the idea of being able to market a game as Mature/Teen. This is about more than whats suitable for Adults and Teens. Many adults, my self included, would like to have the ability to turn off offensive and in some cases even non-offensive content or just to a different mode. Does anyone else remember older games that let you change blood from red to green etc? If they could do it back then why cant they do it now?

Nice post.

My first thought was that I like the idea that you can change the level of detail in blood and gore so some people can play their own way. And you can still keep the default settings on if you want-- so you can still play the way developers are meant for it to be.

However after thinking about it-- the game is made a specific way, and I think that's how it should be played. If someone doesn't like the level of blood or something about the game-- that game is not meant for them. You can't change the level of blood in movies, and people don't see movies that are too much for them. I think it should be the same way.

I already voted on my first thought, and I can't retract my vote, but let it be known I think otherwise.

I know you are in the majority El Jefe and most people will agree with you. But there are a large minority like myself who are adults that have money to spend on games but don't buy certain ones because there is no option to make them agreeable with our taste.

I'm not saying that the developers would make boat loads of cash off of the minority but including such options I think would sell them more games.

I think that this line of thinking is more and more prevalent. Its along the lines of "are video games an art form" debate. (which I don't want to get into because I feel its personal preference and there is no right or wrong)
I apologize if this isn't where your coming from.

I think it's a great feature for parents that wish to play mature games without worrying about their kids seeing or hearing stuff they shouldn't. Obviously there's no way to strip the offensive material from a game like Manhunt because it's built around the nastiness but a majority of mature games could benefit.

As a kid I benefitted from Duke Nukem 3D's content adjusters allowing me to play the game without offending the parents so it can work both ways.

As long as the original content (in terms of story and gameplay) isnt altered in order to make it 'look normal' when turned off, i have no problem with it. If a maker wants to go as hardcore as possible to get their story across, then do it all the way. If there are cuts, I would like them to be looking VERY awkward with certain details missing, or even just cut scenes out all together. I dont want to feel like the blood or profanity is thrown in as an afterthought just for the sake of having blood or profanity.

I would love this option. I am 23 have a wife and son (two years old). I cannot play my game when my son is around. My wife hates the violent games. If only R6V and RFOM had a no blood option I could play twice as much. The only FROM I ave played in front of my son is a custom matc with melee only kills. Those are pretty funny to watch and play.

Default Should developers make a possibility of turning off mature rated things in games?

I dont think its a great idea because I work in Gamestop in California and I see kids getting mature rated games just as long as their parents give the ok because thats Gamestop's rule where we have to ask the parents if its ok for their child to play a mature rated game and usually the answer is ok. Besides even if the child told their parent oh dont worry i wont play it in the mature rated version ill just play it in the teen rated version in California most of the kids want the blood, sex, language, drugs and the whole nine yards thats why Grand Theft Auto is so popular and so thats why when their parents are at work the kids will come home from school and play it in mature rated version. Plus in video game systems there is the parental controls for the games they play where if the security level is to high they cant play the game unless they know the parent's password to unlock the controls. So really i blame the parents for not keeping their kids game systems secure enough themselves.

ok let's say you take profanity and blood out..what's the difference if the content of the game is still mature or explicit...lets say they put this option in the new GTA4, would it make a difference? if the script was, "let's go pump some f•••ing lead into these c•••suckers" and then u filtered it to, "let's go pump lead into these guys", and then you carry on the mission without the blood, is it now suitable for kids? Bottom line is, if your not old or mature enough for the content, or just can't handle it, then don't play it..why spend hard earn money into something that offends you?

That would be a great option. I watch/manage what my kid plays. Unfortunately, he can't play many titles. Dynasty Warriors was a fun game for us. No blood. If they had had blood flying everywhere, he couldn't have played the game. And same for me as with the poster above. Some games I can't play while he is awake or in the room. So, I just don't get the chance to play.

Mainly, I have problems with games aimed at kids. You could turn off the blood on Tony Hawk. That was great.

I don't see this feature becoming a reality. But it would be a welcome one.

at least some of these features would be nice, some would be as easy as having bad words changed or cut out, i know that was one reason i couldnt play grand theft auto san andres with out the volume off. if i was in another room or my kids just went to bed they could still hear.

It's good and bad because, me personally I would want to play the game the way the developers intended for it to be. I know if I'm playing GTA or another violent type game and my stepchildren are around me, I would want the option to cut off blood and profanity(and before you say kick them out of whereever I play, it's been tried and it doesn't work in their case. They love their stepfather to death.).

I think it's silly and pointless. A child playing a shooter without blood is still playing a shooter. You can't remove violence from video games by simply removing blood. The point of the game is still to kill shit.

If you don't want your kid to play a violent game, don't buy violent games for them, simple as that. You aren't doing anything but fooling yourself if you think it's any different letting them play it with or without blood.

This isnt a debate about should kids play Mature games. Neither is it a question of should they take the blood/swearing out of games.

The question is: Since there is so much extra room on the Blu-ray discs and they tout extra features and content as a selling point, do you think they should include the option to turn things like blood/profanity on/off for those players who dont want them on.
