Default Hypothetical Question: Can you...

...hook up two receivers to one speaker? Via the HF binding posts for one receiver and the LF posts for another?

Here's the situation. I'm about to get an XPA-3, and maybe even an UPA-2. Now, I route all my sound through my VSX-03. When watching TV, playing video games (rare enough), music, movies, etc.

But what I don't want to do is have the amplifiers running when I'm simply watching TV (outside of football), watching at incredibly low volumes, or when my roommates are watching TV shows (DVD) at low volumes. So what I planned on doing is using a spare Sony receiver (STR-DGsomething, I can't recall...720? was that it? 7 something) I've come into possession to hook up to the television and the DVD player they use. Now, here's the tricky part. Can I then run wire from this second receiver to the open binding posts on the other speakers?

And, I'm guessing I do, but I run a huge risk if somehow both receivers happen to be on and send the same signal at the same time, correct? Maybe I should get alternate tiny speakers and hide them somewhere...

...In any case, just checking.

There are plenty of amplifier and speaker selectors. I highly recommend them. Search Ebay.

Hey Pops. Been a while.

I understand that, but - simply put - CAN you? SHOULD you?

If you connect two amplifiers to one set of speakers, the stronger one will see the other one as a load resistance and tries to drive that one. There are impedance implications that can create problems. It is like connecting two speakers to one amp.

Don't do it unless you are using an amp selector or you can manually disconnect one from the speakers while you are using the other one.

Gotcha. You are right. I'll just find myself an alternate pair of small speakers to hide somewhere in the room.

Why don't you just use the TV speakers for those applications?

I uhhh, long removed the Pio's speakers, and rigged them up to the smaller TV in my room (took that TV apart, pulled out its speaker cables, and hooked em up to the soundbar from the Pioneer)
