Man only 5 makes it tough.

I'm not going to put this in any order because I think the Top 5 to me all have equal desirability.

1. LotR Trilogy- near perfection in casting and characters. You actually "care" about each and every one of the characters. Score is beautiful, cinematography beautiful. Likely Jackson's "Master Class" movie for this life.

2. Gladiator- I never get tired of watching this movie. Standout performances by Richard Harris, Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix. I'll buy this on every format it comes in.

3. Star Wars- Although I didn't like Return of the Jedi all that much the Trilogy was groundbreaking and always has a place in my heart.

4. Ben Hur- One classic that I just truly love. "Let my people go!" Truly an Epic.

5. Tie Schindlers List/Shawshank Redemption- To movies where the storytelling was a pure work of art. Spielberg and Darabont have changed my life with these movies.

I have struggled to choose only 5 as well and decided to use the "stuck on a desert island (w/hdtv, sound system, +PS3) and only have room for 5 movies" approach

The Empire Strikes Back: The first Star Wars trilogy was great with the 2nd movie standing out. It was the 1st movie that I had seen at that time that had such a such a cataclymismic ending. "Luke, I am your father" just blew me away and had me dying to see the next installment which disappointed.

Raiders of the Lost Ark: Gotta have an action flick and this is just iconic IMO. It brought back the cliffhanger to the 80s and sparked my love of anthropology and ancient history. Love the storyline, soundtrack

BraveHeart: I struggled between BraveHeart and Gladiator finally giving the nudge to Braveheart's theme of avenging your slain family and at the same time being the underdog/freedom fighter. Also love Scotland and Bagpipes!

Forrest Gump: For a large part of my career I worked with population that one could term learning disabled or mentally retarded so this had almost an automatic appeal for me. While some of the coincidences he encounters through the movie are somewhat on the unbelievable side, I have always loved watching this movie. Love the roller coaster ride that was depicted as his life. Great music too. And he got the girl!

The Passion of The Christ: For me this one I cannot do without. Obviously very spiritual movie. It reminds me of what I have learned about since I was a kid. Love the fact that it used the Aramaic language and gave me a real sense of being there. At the same time the movie was brutal and hard to watch IMO. One of the final scenes, where the viewer follows God's tear falling to the Earth, gets me every time. It is also the only movie I ever attended where after it was done everyone remained in their seats and sort of looked at each other and for a brief moment there was just an awesome connection. At least that was the case at the movie theater I attended

And there are so many more, but you asked for 5. I'm also a big fan of horror but felt the above 5 meant the most to me.

LOL - Isn't that also the theme of Gladiator?

I define "top movies" as the ones I like to watch over and over... not necessarily the "smartest" or Oscar-caliber, but hey. My top 5, in no particular order:

1.) Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade
2.) Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire
3.) Sense & Sensibility
4.) Love Actually
5.) Stalag 17
