Default Sony supports iPod. Apple to support Blu-ray?

In an almost mind-blowing revelation, Sony will introduce an alarm clock and boom box with an Ipod dock built in. While not abandoning their own portable music aspirations, Sony has recognized that "consumers are treating the iPod as a format, like the compact disc".

Now this begs the question: If Sony is going to start supporting Ipod products, will Apple now start supporting Blu-ray products? We know they sit on the board of the BDA, but have yet to introduce a product which supports Blu-ray. Could this the signal that something is coming.

I know it may be a stretch, but its a slow day in the office .

Not really a stretch.

One of things planned for the bounty of BD50 is versions of the movie tailored for portables. This would mean the PQ was engineered by a compressionist, and not subject to re-encoding artifacting (and increase in size?) by a managed copy scenario.

PSP is clearly one target. But, if Sony is going to be considering the iPOD a key portable video player too, then they'd probably target that as well. And put transfer support into the PS/3.

I'd expect Apple to be very interested in making sure a Mac could be part of that process.

My entire company is run on Macs (not a Windows-based PC in sight!), so I try to keep up with all the Apple rumors, as 90% of them tend to be true.

Apple is getting ready to unveil specs for their new iMacs sometime during the first two weeks in August (the 7th is the speculated date). Now, while Apple has long championed their Superdrive (DL DVD burner), there has been some discussion that the new iMacs may have an upgrade option for a Blu-ray burner.

This is, of course, pure speculation, but has been mentioned on MacNN and ThinkSecret.

While Sony does have a portable mp3 device, they are neither branding nor marketing it intensely, most likely because there's no reason to. iPod owns the portable music market, and there's probably higher profits in accessories.

Don't the PS3/PSP and iPod all use the same format for video files? The only problem I see with this is that Sony will basically be killing the market for UMD movies if they put a PSP playable version of their movies on BD.

Probably the same codec. But, the screen resolutions are different. I would think they'd target each resolution.

Only the iPod supports FairPlay though... And, well, that's also the only DRM that the iPod supports.

I second ipod transfer support and compatability with the PS3 as well. My wife LOVES her ipod and REALLY wants to be able to add her collection to the PS3 to listen to tunes around the house without any hassle.

Somebody call Steve...
