Default ‘Cloudy’ Available To Bravia Owners First

from homediamagazine.com:

‘Cloudy’ Available To Bravia Owners First
By : Chris Tribbey | Posted: 09 Nov 2009

Owners of Sony Electronics’ Bravia HDTVs and Blu-ray Disc players will be the first to enjoy the Sony Pictures animated film Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs a full month before the Jan. 5 DVD and Blu-ray Disc releases.

From Dec. 8 to Jan. 4, the film, which earned more than $120 million at the domestic box office, can be rented in high-definition on networked Bravia HDTVs and Blu-ray players for $24.95 for a 24-hour rental. Consumers who buy and register a Bravia HDTV or Blu-ray player between Nov. 9 and Jan. 4 will receive a 24-hour rental of the film for free. Sony will advertise the initiative starting Nov. 9.

“Given our breadth of content and strength in networked products, Sony is the first company to utilize its internet enabled TVs and other networked devices to stream feature films directly to consumers’ televisions prior to availability on DVD or Blu-ray,” said Hiro Kawano, SVP for Sony Electronics’ home division business.

Sony offered a similar pre-DVD stream of the action adventure film Hancock in late 2008 at just $9.99, allowing Bravia owners to rent the film nearly a month before the DVD and Blu-ray release. Those who streamed the film and registered were also sent a Blu-ray copy of the film.

On Jan. 5, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will offer single- and two-DVD versions of the film ($28.96 and $34.95, respectively), with the two-disc version including behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted scenes, a music video, an interactive sing-a-long, and a “Food Fight” game. The Blu-ray ($39.95) will have a DVD copy of the film, an enhanced version of the game, and a “Splat Mode!” which lets viewers throw food at the screen while watching.

A UMD version for the PlayStation Portable will also be available for $24.94.

Actually, they are not joking, but the $24.95 will get them am early "rental" and an eventual copy of the Blu-ray.
