Mine does that when the TV is off. You may have an HDMI handshake problem.

A bit of quick Googling makes me think that this might be an HDMI handshake problem - are you using HDMI and do you have another cable to test with?

Try reseating the cable for sure - HDMI is a great electrical standard but utterly awful in terms of actually staying connected.

Is it a recent purchase? How long have you had that player and TV hooked up together. Did it work properly at first?

If you bypass the receiver and hook directly to the TV does it still do it. If it does I would try a new cable.

I took the hdmi cable out of the receiver to the blu-ray and only put the other hdmi cable to the blu-ray and tv and i didn't get the u73 message.

Please tell me there isn't a problem with my Yamaha receiver rx-v565.

PS How many HDMI cables do you need i was told 2 is this correct.

Yes correct you need Two HDMI cables one from Blu-ray player to receiver input then from your receiver output signal to HDMI input at your TV.

Maybe one of the cable is defective when you did directly connect your player to TV.now check the other one and see if this message will appear again.

I can give you some of my experience with:
TH-50PZ85A
DMP-BD35
RX-V665

I have read much discussion about this problem.

First thing to try. Always power on the BD35 last, so the order is 1 TV, 2 Yamaha, 3 BD35. I use a Harmony remote and have set it that way and it's helped a little bit.

When trying to play a BD through the RX-V665, turn off the receiver. If you have the "thru" hdmi set when off, I'll bet it will "handshake" (connect). It seems to be a problem with the combination of Yamaha and BD35.

Also, I've found that I just wasn't waiting long enough. Hook up your HDMI through the Yamaha, put in a BD and just watch the Yamaha display. If you see some indicators change, just wait, maybe several minutes. If the display is changing, it's trying to handshake. Sometimes the movie will start and the BD35 will still show U73 but will display HDMI after a short while. I was very upset about this for a while until I just waited for a longer time for handshaking to occur. If I wait long enough, every BD I've tried will work.

Also, while the BD35 is trying to "handshake" through the Yamaha, press the "setup" button on the Yamaha remote. You might just hear the audio from the disk. Press it again and sometimes it forces handshaking.

Don't know if you have your BD35 connected to the internet, but I've upgraded my firmware several times to 1.9, but this hasn't seemed to affect the handshaking problem.

I've read about bad cables, but if each cable works when connected directly, BD35 to TV, then I don't think it's the cables. In my case all of the cables worked when bypassing the Yamaha.

I'm pretty "geeky" and have played around with this a long time. I've discovered that HDMI and Blu-ray are not perfected technologies and I guess that's the price we pay for living on the "bleeding edge".

Good luck and let me know of your progress.
(I'm not ready to give up on my BD35 because, from what I've read, it's a very good player.)

I also have notice when i had the blu-ray connected to the receiver the little red HDMI signal in the receiver would flash and take a minute to load. But once bd loaded it was fine the flashing stopped and it played right through without any problems.

The technician who came to connect everything told me it could be because of the HDCP i have know idea.?

I have the latest firmware up for oceania 1.5 as i'm in australia and most of you are probably in the us with 1.9.

I notice that apart from the Yamaha all your gear is Panasonic, check through your user manual for info on "Viera Link".
This is similar to Sony's "Bravia Link" which allows you to just load a disk and the whole system will set itself up..(all needs to be in Standby mode of course)
I have a Sony Bravia Full HD TV , Sony 5300ES AVR, Sony 708H DVD player and a Panasonic BD30 BluRay player.
All I need to do is load a disk(may have to switch TV Audio from TV speakers to Audio System ) and away it goes. Turn on sequence is BD player starts loading then TV starts followed by AVR. To trun off, press TV remote on/off and everything will shut down...
All units are connected to AVR via HDMI, thence to TV, also HDMI.
I was pleasantly surprised taht the Panny BD player's Viera link seems to work pretty well with the Bravia Link system.
Don't know whether this will help you but reading the manual thoroughly always pays off.

PS I'm in Perth....

Tried both hdmi cables separatley through blu-ray to tv and u73 didn't show up on the blu-ray so i don't think it is my cables.
I'd really like to hear from dhoover again i liked to ask does your blu-rays play right through without any trouble.

I still have trouble sometimes when the Blu-ray disc starts up; I'll get the U73 error for a minute or two, sometimes five minutes. But if I leave it alone and wait long enough, it starts up. Once it starts up, it always plays through to the end just fine.

I agree with you, but I beg to differ in your last statement, if I may: HDMI is not a great standard, because it sends data in parallel, with no error correction whatsoever. It was imposed to users in order to reinforce HDCP.

But mostly, in some instances it may not work because the system admits more than one handshaking, and that is where the problems start. To each make and model there may be completely different negotiation protocols, so you gear may work well with one and not with another.

In my home, I have two distinct scenarios for handshaking. I interconnected a Panasonic BD30 and an Oppo 980H to an Onkyo SR-605:

In the case of the BD30 it is irrelevant if I turn it on first or last, it will capture the handshaking and work. However, if I turn on the BD30 and the receiver only, the player will not work, I have to turn the TV on as well!

In the case of the 980H it is even stranger: I can turn the Oppo with the Onkyo in any order. If I have to use the TV later, it will work as well. If I turn these three components simultaneously, in most cases they will not handshake. When I first found this out, I wrote to the Oppo support, did several suggested tests, but at no avail. Later, I found out (by accident and luck) that whenever I need to turn all three at once, I must turn the Onkyo and the TV on first in any order and let them handshake. After that I can turn on the Oppo and it will work as intended, no problem! I reported my findings to Oppo and they were happy to know, because they have encountered a number of odd handshaking problems themselves.

In many cases, handshaking can be corrected by a firmware update. If not, the user must find a way to achieve correct handshaking negotiations, so that all intended equipment will work. Sadly, there are instances that no negotiation will be possible (a friend of mine is plagued with one case) and the device will render useless to HDMI hookups.

Normally, unstable HDMI connections are suggestive of poor cabling, and in these cases it is recommended that suspected cables be replaced by trustworthy brands.

Check page 37 of your manual. This is a HDMI Connection issue. My guess, after reading your posts, is that your receiver and HDMI cables do not like each other. IE Handshake issue. Or perhaps one of your cables is bad.

I possibly misinterpreted your question. If I connect the BD35 directly to the TV, I never have any problems or delays connecting or playing bd's.

If both cables worked fine connected to the TV, it sounds to me like a HDMI handshake issue w/ the receiver.

But what about when you play through the receiver do your bd play ok because i watched the rock without any problems.
I will still use my receiver and blu-ray because i have just spent about $5000.00 on updating everthing but i didn't think blu-ray would be this technical.
