Default Best TV 42' and up ?

My sister is looking to buy a new television with a budget around $900.

I'm not completely sure the differences between Plasma vs. LCD.

She wants a TV at least 42 in and any larger would be great, but I wasn't sure what to expect with the budget.

Thanks for any input.

If I need to move the thread to another forum just tell me.

I'm in the market with the same criteria. I was hoping to get a Panasonic G10 42" or 46". I saw the 46" on sale during a lightning deal on Amazon about a week ago for $999. I am hoping for some similar sales come Black Friday.

I have owned 3 samsung flatscreens in the past 3 yrs and upgrade every other yr or so.. I will be picking up the 58" version of this next year

Tiger Direct has a pretty sweet deal right now. Free Bluray player with purchase of a Bravia 5100. Free shipping too. The 40" + BDP N460(Sony Bluray player) + free shipping = $954.98! I'm thinking about selling a kidney to get this deal!

Dell Home is selling the Panasonic 42" TC-P42X1 (720p) for $529 and the 50" TC-P50X1 (720p) for $669. Both with free shipping.

US Appliance.com has the Panasonic 42" TC-P42S1 (1080p) for $799 with a free Panasonic BD60 Blu-ray player and free shipping.

put it next to a samsung pn 650.. To me BOTH calibrated, samsungs blacks were darker, whites were "white" not washed with a yellow tint, which had to do with the contrast and quality of the panel and processor

OP trust me, if you need em ill link you reviews done showing the samsung at the top of the list for 3 years now.. ( cnet, consumer reports, electronic reviews etc )

In doing a little research I came down to these Panasonic Plasmas

Panasonic TC-P50G10 (My sister may opt for a smaller size ex. 46')
and
Panasonic TC-P50S1

I was wondering if there are any big differences here.
I looked into the Samsungs but I noticed most of the displays have a red tint around the edge and I know my sister wouldn't like that because it wouldn't match the room.

Thanks for the help.

Grif32, I was just wondering how you like your onkyo receiver and polk speakers?

3 years now? Bested the Kuro's in 2007 and 2008? That doesn't sound very trustworthy to me because I know it's not true.

Consumer Reports is only a valid source for panel repair rates, they don't test with any equipment remotely worth considering for serious viewers. HD Guru, Home Theater Mag, Sound and Vision, these are places worth checking data from; CNET has not put a Samsung at the top of its list for three years running, sorry.

And if you're referring to the 8500U series which is BRAND NEW, it's triple the cost of what's being discussed in this thread. In fact the CNET link posted just after your post lists the G10 series ahead of the 650PN series.

If you saw my original post about it I didn't say it topped a pioneer. Kuro OR elite. I said highest rated UNDER $2000. Or $1500. One ofthe two. I have been into this HDTV scene heavily for the past 3 years and I've researched everything top end out there.

Also if you looked a little harder you'll see a kuro was in my suggestions.

I'm on a phone posting so that's why I said I'll show reviews later. To much of a pita on this. How bout the op just goes and compares himself? Cuz its obvious everyone is gonna say there suggestion is "best". Sorry guys. No such thing

and to the panasonic fan boys. That last comment was for you

Yes you're right, it does say that, my apologies.

Hmm, but you're saying the one you're recommending is the best, so how is the last comment for Panasonic fanboys?

As for the OP comparing himself, unless the store's lighting is remotely similar to his own home lighting it's a useless endeavor other than to see the aesthetics.

http://hdguru.com/how-retailers-use-...tv-buyers/467/

And there is such a thing as the best, right now it's the KRP-500M.

But most of the reviews I've read give the nod to the G10 in that price range we're discussing.

Then explain to me why out-of-warranty repairs for samsung are so much cheaper on plasmas (roughly $600 for a 50 inch 720p panel) vs panasonic (roughly $1100 for a 50 inch 720p panel) and when i say panel i mean JUST replacing the panel... those costs come directly from the repair shop we work with... its not that panny is charging a premium, its that it is a better quality panel.

The samsung may have darker blacks, but panasonic has better shadow detail. The only reason the whites would be "tinted yellow" would be a warm color temperature (which more accurately represents the color spectrum) which is not a bad thing
