Default Best first blu-ray?

So I'm giving my father my onkyo receiver, sub and some surround speakers for christmas and he's buying some polk fronts and center and a blu-ray player. what would be the best first blu-ray for him to own/watch? He'll be coming from a generic samsung home theater setup and even though the onkyo sub isn't amazing its definitely way better than his current one, nevermind the polk monitor 60s and cs10.

Something generic like Avatar or The Dark Knight.

Or something that might be more father-themed such as Saving Private Ryan (great audio) or Alien or even Super 8.

Or if you're dad is the shit, just show him 2001: A Space Odyssey on blu.

Find out what his favorite DVDs are. Buy a BD version of one of them, if available.

Don't just pick a generic action movie. Find out what some of his favorite movies are, and maybe either list those here or read reviews for them to find out if any of them have reference quality PQ and AQ. If not, settle for something like Avatar.

My father likes Super 8 and he thought Dark Knight was so so. I see him watching Saving Private Ryan on TV a lot.

My father doesn't like Top Gun. He watches Master and Commander on occasion.

If he likes westerns I'd go with The Searchers or the original True Grit.

The Dark Knight for sure. And you can pick it up at Best Buy for $4.99 right now. And while you're at it, get Inception as well for $4.99!

band of brothers, saving private ryan, or u-571 (or all 3).

all three of those are amazing on bd and will blow him away in both picture and sound.

I was thinking about U-571 because I don't think either of us have seen it. Then I could also borrow it to listen to this famed depth charge scene with my new sub(still not sure what it will be, most likely Epik Legend)

I would recommend finding out what his favorite films are, checking to see if they are on blu and go by the reviewers and users reviews and make your choice. No sense getting him something he may not care for.

The Thin Red Line is one of my demo discs that gets strong "oooh" reactions both PQ/AQ.
Of course, the film is certainly quite polarizing in terms of actual enjoyment.

Star Trek (2009) of course is a more generally crowd pleasing title that boosts great PQ and a somewhat more subtle, but striking AQ level too.

for showing off what "older" movies can look/sound like I usually use
Taxi Driver , North By Northwest, Casablanca, and Once Upon a Time in the West
